If you read Psalm 118, you notice an oft-repeated phrase “for his steadfast love endures forever,” or some versions have it “for his mercy endures forever.” Or, if you look at Psalm 136, all twenty-six verses have the phrase. It is a phrase repeated 42 times in the Hebrew Scriptures, so one might think it is important. Any time there is so much repetition it would be wise to understand it and try to live as if we understand it. The idea is to get to the “root meaning,” to go as close as possible to what many wise researchers believe is the true meaning of the root, and try to extract into English, cutting out a lot of “middle-men,” who may have been working in other languages or through other traditions. Long story short, כי לעולם חסדו is the Hebrew. What really does it mean?
Let’s look at those three words (לעולם and חסדו appear together an additional sixteen times, and we will look first at those, and then at כי).

In essence what it says is that “in burning and in dimming, his devotion is hidden.” God loves us devotedly, even when he looks like fire. God loves us devotedly when he can’t be seen, when it feels like he has pulled away from us. It takes amazing strength to be a devoted loving parent and behave in such a way as to look mean or absent in order to get one’s child to learn an important life lesson.
