There are many words indicating the above list of verbs. This Blog was first inspired by the people’s complaints in the wilderness, but covers much more than that. As you progress, you may see that the more positive “calling out” words (the ones to which the LORD (יהוה) responds), seem to be associated with salvation ישע and ישועה and commands צוה. (And please see שוע and צוח are cognates.) But please draw your own conclusions.

  • Very important word to understand here: 
  • h3976. מֹאזֵן mô’zên; from h0239. אָזַן ’âzan; h0238. אָזַן ’âzan; (only in the dual) a pair of scales: — balances. – h0238. אָזַן ’âzan is “to give ear,” “to listen.” h0238. אָזַן ’âzan is used in parallel with h8085. שָׁמַע šâma‘ 24 times, and h8085. שָׁמַעšâma‘ is the all-important Shema, as in “Hear O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one.” 
  • In the current context of this “blog,” read and understand Exodus 17:14, באזנייהושע “in the hearing of Joshua,” as Joshua has imbedded שוע. The reader should look up these verses:

The “heavenly courts” hear and weigh; this is where the impressions are made, and where the “balance” of good and evil is discerned. It is not in mankind’s ability to perceive, due to the lack of the perspective from without. We try to judge from within, but all we can really do is import our own biases. Only One has the perspective to listen to the counsel of many and determine. Thus for mankind’s purposes, “Justice” must wear a blindfold to our own perception:

  • One other thing to note here, it is not “the nations,” but simply “nations” that in God’s perspective are not significant. Nations is from p.37 גוה concentrate disparate elements;; CM concentrate (C3). It is getting too complex to put yet another EDBH entry here, but please look it up if you have the book. A most important verse in its entry is Genesis 47:18, where גוה is the root for the word for the human body. Our nations and our bodies are not significant to God. It is our spirit that is God’s primary concern. Our bodies and our nations are simply teaching methods, in the proper formation of our spirit, as we become what is next up on the list here. What is critical is how we treat one another.

The independent pronoun for “we” אנחנו – Strongs says the plural first person, usually used for emphasis, apparently from the first person singular independent pronounאנכי.- maybe – BHS shows 67 occurrences.

Exodus 3:7

  • This writer has heard presentations of this being both as a negative “calling” and a positive “calling.” Perhaps a reason for the confusion is the word translated here as “began,” listed as the hophal of חלל.

  • BHS shows הוחל occurring “in this form” 15 times. Perhaps looking at the variant family of חל enlightens:

  • One might do well to ponder the relationships among these different roots in the חל Family. On p.295, the exact wording of the description of Gradational Variants is, “Each of the word families created by the above formula is inter-related. Their respective meanings show degrees of intensity or similar activity in other spheres.”  Look at the list and their meanings. The writer looked at each of the fifteen occurrences listed in BHS, in English translation. It is too much to add in here, but the reader may want to look up the occurrences on his/her own and draw some conclusions. The only one of the fifteen occurrences where it appears as הוחל is in the verse investigated here. In the remainder it is החל. The verses are Gn4:26, 6:1, 10:8, 44:12; Nm17:11-12 (16:46-47 in English); Jg20:39; 1S14:35; 2K10:32, 15:37; 1Ch1:10, 27:24; 2Ch29:27, 31:21, 34:3. The writer has drawn some potential conclusions about in what circumstances/spheres it might be that “beginning” and “profaning” might be related. But please look to draw your own conclusions.

Numbers 11:1

1 And the people complained (h0596. אָנַן ’ânan) in the hearing of the LORD about their misfortunes, and when the LORD heard it, his anger was kindled, and the fire of the LORD burned among them and consumed some outlying parts of the camp.

Genesis 7:1-6   Looking for אנח cognate permutations 

1 Then the LORD said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation. 2 From all the animals which clean take to you seven each man and wife; and from animals that are not clean, two each of man and his wife; 3 also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to allow to live seed on the face of all the earth (h0776. אֶרֶץ ’ereṣ). 4 For to days still seven I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy all living things that I have made from the face of the earth (h0127. אֲדָמָה’ăḏâmâ).” 5 And Noah did according to all that the LORD commanded him. 6 Noah(wasa son of six hundred years when the floodwaters were on the earth (h0776. אֶרֶץ’ereṣ).

Bereshit 7:1-6

1 ויאמר יהוה לנח בא־אתה וכל־ביתך אל־התבה כי־אתך ראיתי צדיק לפני בדור הזה׃

“Best guess” on this writer’s part is that the “also” reference is to the cognate “rest” חנה, in relation to the seventh day concept of Sabbath. Next best guess is a typo on verse, and they refer to Noah in verse 5. A long stretch on that possibility would be reference to נחם – from אנכי ממטיר, “I cause it to rain,” in reference to Genesis 5:29:

Genesis 5:29   Lamech speaking, perhaps prophesying:

29 And he called his name Noah (h5146. נֹחַ naḥ), saying, “This one will comfort(h5162. נָחַם nâḥam) us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD has cursed.”

  • It is important to notice Kedesh is the root p.224 קדש (prepare for task; dedicate all resources), the root translated as, among other things, to sanctify or make holy. Judges 4 and 5 are a beautiful pairing of Biblical prose followed by Biblical poetry. (See post number 13. Poetry in Scripture.)

Please notice the cycles. Cycles are what were proclaimed after the flood (the Noah experience), in Genesis 8:22. Cycles will persist. God’s response to manage man’s not ceasing from their own doings nor from their stubborn way, is also one of cycles. It is seen throughout Judges, and seen throughout the reign of the kings.

Ezekiel 30:24-25

24 I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put My sword in his hand; but I will break Pharaoh’s arms, and he will groan (h5008. נָאַק nâ’aq) before him with the groanings (h5009. נְאָקָה ne’âqâ) of a mortally wounded man. 25 Thus I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh shall fall down; they shall know that I am the LORD, when I put My sword into the hand of the king of Babylon and he stretches it out against the land of Egypt.

  • This is a very commonly used word. For the word h7121. קָרָא qârâ’ itself, not including its derived words, Strongs lists 735 occurrences. Most uses do not seem to be in the nature of complaint. Notice that the method used to name the books of Torah is to use the keyword from the first line of the book (also used to name the Parshas, or Torah Portions, the sections for study each week). The name in Judaism for Leviticus you have seen many times, VaYikra, is ויקרא, “And he called.” Notice also that Torah, תורה, is derived from the root ירה, which is a cognate of קרא.

  • One of the words discussed here previously is קרבp.233 קרב draw close. If the reader recalls from earlier entries, it is the root for the common word, קרבן, for “offering.” Something brought in order to “draw close” to God (which can also be seen in life as bringing a gift or offering to another person to “bring together” or “draw close.” 
  • One of the formative books in this writer’s journey toward getting to know God better was the book The Call, by Os Guinness. This was read and discussed in a small group setting, a covenant group, who drew close to one another (a group called “Digging Deeper”).
  • Stretch your brain in a small exercise here. First, think of קרב as in ב + קר, being “in” קר, whatever קר is. Next, look over each of these variants listed above, that the word קר would relate to. Then look up the verses where the two-letter word קר appears, indicated in the קר listing above with ⬅︎. Each of the verses somehow fits with the others. Allow your brain to see the connections. See a connection that might be something along the lines of “contrasts.”  Where there is heat, cold; where there is agitation, calm; where there are walls, breaking them down; where there is thirst, a quenching. Is this not being “in the call,” drawing close to God, being who God wants us to be? When the walls are broken down, the similarities between contrasts can be seen, and the contrasts somehow are not as important anymore.

  • It is this very passage in which the writer has heard teachings both about its being a positive and its being a negative “calling.” ♼ see comment later. Always keep in mind the cognate meaning, limit activity, which could be seen in a positive or negative light, from our perspective.

  • Perhaps the best lesson here from the joining of these verses is that we should be fearful of calling on the name of the LORD (יהוה) lightly.

  • Recall that ירה is the root for Torah, and is “teaching.” The joining of these referent verses gives the message that those things that “befall” us in our lives are teaching moments, purposeful learning times. All of course, is to help us to draw closer to God. Things do no occur by accident, but are all for a greater purpose. At the call of God.

Again, this appears to be that to which Saul who was renamed Paul was referring in saying, “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

Our preparation for the life beyond that here on this earth (being prepared thoroughly) is to experience the full spectrum, the extremes of “good and evil,” what we see as positive and negative. This is why the model of the world in which God can live with us (the Tabernacle) must include both. And why we must have the full range of emotions, “the thrill of victory; the agony of defeat.” It is in this way that we become complete, 

p.264 שלם harmonize; complete. When you wish someone Shalom, you wish completeness, harmony; harmony is balance; the full spectrum of experience thus Job was in the depths and came after repentance, to the point of Job 42:12

“Virtual experiences” can only take one so far because of the lack of true emotional investment. There must be some “skin” in the game. And do recall the final blow from HaSatan to Job was boils on his skin.

One can go through life trying to avoid pain, but that gets one nowhere. The loving LORD knows we must have the “full experience” for completeness. At some point we will get to a huge discussion of nurturing and weaning, but that is for another time. For now there is one more piece to tie in, which  the reader may have already guessed, from earlier”hints.” That is the messiah piece. Messiah is משיח/משח. The word has already been discussed on the website a few times because, more than anything, there is not a clear sense of what smearing oil on someone really means relative to today’s world. Recall:

p.144 משח separate out;; CM separate (B61)  by the way מצה as in unleavened, is one of the cognates. We do know that the oil of anointing (its base being olive oil, created under pressure) gives a similar picture to the acacia underlying the structure of the Tabernacle.

Consider משח as ש + חם/מח, having looked at חם and מח above, and also recalling from above ש as the “relative,” meaning “which is” or “it is/exists.” So, if one considered the messiah concept, it would be:

ש is “which is” + חם is the spectrum of expressing and withholding feelings

ש is “which is” + מח is the spectrum of plenty and poverty

The Paul quotation above is from Philippians. Some versions insert the word for messiah for “him” who strengthens me. The word is not there, but in a sense one could see how the concept fits exactly with Paul’s statement.

  • The verse referred-to is 40, as marked with the arrow. One never knows for certain why a certain verse is selected. Is it for us to see that אנכי is another common word for “I?” Is it to draw was to this localized context? Is it to pull focus away from the ה and get the reader to search for palatals with the נ and guttural rather than נ and two gutturals. Or is it perhaps simply to reinforce the common Scriptural message, that we must always be cautious about making assumptions? Are we being reminded to be “torn apart,” “pulled in opposite directions,” rather than focusing just on “I, my, me.”
  • The other teaching point is that there are several other “I’s” here in the English than there are I pronouns in the Hebrew. Often stand-alone pronouns are used for emphasis, especially אני and אנכי, because the verbs already have a suffix, so it is a “redundancy,” or duplication. Look, for example at “I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal.” See the underlined I’s for kill and heal, but not for make alive and wound. The Hebrew is אֲנִ֧י אָמִ֣ית וַאֲחַיֶּ֗ה מָחַ֨צְתִּי֙ וַאֲנִ֣י אֶרְפָּ֔א. All four verbs have thefirst person singular suffixbut only two pronouns are here.
  • It turns out that the root רנן, seen in the first word of verse 43, translated here asrejoice,” is also a calling out, crying out word, listed in EDBH p.245 רנן express emotion. So, another side-trip to look at that, and then a return to אנה

  • Apologies if this writer shares biases, but this is an example (the same issue as with בשׂר – tidings, not necessarily “good tidings”), there is a level of “interpretation” added with the word “joyfully” here. If one looks at the usage of this word, occurring 46 times, one can see that a more accurate way to interpret would simply be “shout,” and let the reader consider the context as to whether it is in joy or in distress or alarm. And this happens with both Jewish and Christian translations, no fingers pointed in a particular direction. This writer’s plea is simply for as “untainted interpretation” as possible, not trying to drive people to agree with one point of view or another. Simply look at the wording.   • So, “express emotion,” or “shout” would be a good interpretation, and leave out the direction the translator wants others to see, to drive in a certain direction. Allow people to see how the words in Scripture really fit in their own life. We do not have to be in control (or try to be) of other people’s beliefs. We need to let them know that Scripture, the Word of God, will speak into their life, without all the other added opinions on top. We must not be afraid, as God will lead in the direction desired. Sorry about the soapbox, but this is one of those very obvious examples. There are others less obvious, and the goal here is to help clear some of these “stumbling blocks” that divide, driving people into silos.
  • Here רנן is in parallel with רוע, so the idea is that they have similar meanings. See the EDBH entry for רוע:

  • If one is “broken,” the expressed emotion just may not be “joy.” This is a plea for just doing what Chan says, looking at what it really says and do not overlay, read into it, insert our biases/assumptions.

  • In light of all seen here in this entry, interpret these verses. Each of these verses is David’s ego saying that his cause is just and the “other” is wrong, and thus he desires that the LORD fight for him. First you can see why those anticipating the coming of a warrior messiah would desire such. We saw that with Cyrus being called “my anointed” (messiah משיח).

  • Let’s cover exactly what occurred in the incident of Sodom and Gomorrah in the context being shared here:

There is much, much, much in these chapters, but here focus on one aspect. We are not told who is crying out in Sodom and Gomorrah, only that the outcry is great. The LORD (יהוה) indicates “I will go down now and see•••”ארדה־נאואראה. “I will go down” is ארדה, from p.110 ירד descend. “And see” is ואראה, from p.237 ראה look; see and understand.  And what is translated here as “now” is the word נא, from the Derivational Variant נאה:

  • Recall that we met the word נחם earlier, as Lamech spoke regarding the naming of his son, Noah/Noach (Genesis 5:9), indicating he would “bring us comfort/relief.” 
  • Lamech’s prophetic word was that Noach would bring about a change of attitude (and the reader can see it could be comfort, reconsideration, or regret). ((Very fascinating to look at all of the words that have מ + ל + כ in them, and what the rearranging of letters can mean.))

  • The extensive investigation of אנה is seen above, not pre-planned by this writer.

The LORD’s way of discerning (Gn18:21) “whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not, I will know,” is this “test.” Simply by sending messengers into the city, their presence there, brings about the circumstance in which the people show their true color. Please clearly understand this point. It is a very common method in Scripture and in life. There are seemingly insignificant occurrences that are tests of our nature, our integrity. A very obvious example is in Exodus 16, re: manna:

10 Do not move an ancient landmark

or enter the fields of the fatherless,

11 for their Redeemer is strong;

Divrei Yamim 16:9

9 כי יהוה עיניו משטטות בכל־הארץ להתחזק עם־לבבם שלם אליו נסכלת על־זאת כי מעתה יש עמךמלחמות׃ 

These are the ones (the eyes of the LORD who run to and fro to test) as those who visited Sodom after visiting Abram; their very presence causes us to show our true colors.

Job 34:19-22

1 Kings 22:18-23

18 And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Did I not tell you that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?” 19 And Micaiah said, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing beside him on his right hand and on his left; 20 and the LORD said, ‘Who will entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?’ And one said one thing, and another said another. 21 Then a spirit came forward and stood before the LORD, saying, ‘I will entice him.’ 22 And the LORD said to him, ‘By what means?’ And he said, ‘I will go out, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ And he said, ‘You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do so.’ 23 Now therefore behold, the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these your prophets; the LORD has declared disaster for you.”

Many times have you heard the LORD called the LORD of hosts,

יהוה צבאות.

1 Samuel 1:11

11 וַתִּדֹּ֨ר נֶ֜דֶר וַתֹּאמַ֗ר יְהוָ֨ה צְבָאֹ֜ות אִם־רָאֹ֥ה תִרְאֶ֣ה ׀ בָּעֳנִ֣י אֲמָתֶ֗ךָ וּזְכַרְתַּ֨נִי֙ וְלֹֽא־תִשְׁכַּ֣ח אֶת־אֲמָתֶ֔ךָוְנָתַתָּ֥ה לַאֲמָתְךָ֖ זֶ֣רַע אֲנָשִׁ֑ים וּנְתַתִּ֤יו לַֽיהוָה֙ כָּל־יְמֵ֣י חַיָּ֔יו וּמוֹרָ֖ה לֹא־יַעֲלֶ֥ה עַל־רֹאשֹֽׁו׃

Exodus 16:4-5

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not. 5 And it shall be on day the sixth that they shall establish what they bring in, and it shall be twice as which they gather daily.”

Exodus 16:4-5

4 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה הִנְנִ֨י מַמְטִ֥יר לָכֶ֛ם לֶ֖חֶם מִן־הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וְיָצָ֨א הָעָ֤ם וְלָֽקְטוּ֙ דְּבַר־יֹ֣ום בְּיוֹמֹ֔ו לְמַ֧עַן אֲנַסֶּ֛נּוּהֲיֵלֵ֥ךְ בְּתוֹרָתִ֖י אִם־לֹֽא׃

5 וְהָיָה֙ בַּיֹּ֣ום הַשִּׁשִּׁ֔י וְהֵכִ֖ינוּ אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר־יָבִ֑יאוּ וְהָיָ֣ה מִשְׁנֶ֔ה עַ֥ל אֲשֶֽׁר־יִלְקְט֖וּ יֹ֥ום ׀ יֹֽום׃ ס

On the sixth day mankind shows itself where its heart lies. If there is no intent to rest on the seventh, there will be no extra gathering on the sixth. Such establishes the intents of their hearts. The presence of the manna, a gift, brings out the true heart, in how we deal with it.
