  • In digging deeper, first note that each of the three words includes פ.

Psalms 68:11-14

11 The Lord gave the word;

Great (was) the company of those who proclaimed (h1319. בָּשַׂר ḇâśar) (it):

And she who remains at home divides the spoil.

  • Silver here is h3701. כֶּסֶף ḵesep̱, which we see many times in the Tabernacle. The yellow gold here is not the gold seen in the Tabernacle. This word for gold is h2742. חָרוּץ ḥârûṣ, from the root חרץ, and the only time relative to this entry that חרץ is seen is in Leviticus 22:22 in the list of defects that are not to be offered as freewill offerings נדבה to the LORD יהוה.

39(17:4H) So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers, which those who were burned up had presented, and they were hammered out as a covering (h6826. צִפּוּיṣippûy) on the altar, 40 (to be) a memorial/reminder (h2146. זִכְרוֹן ziḵrôn) to the children of Israel that no outsider, who is not a descendant of Aaron, should come near to offer incense before the LORD, that he might not become like Korah and his companions, just as the LORD had said to him through Moses.

  • Shown here some “make altar” passages in Exodus. See altars are to be constructed of things of God’s creation, not man’s creation (recall the tower at Babel was made of man-made bricks – don’t be so proud of your own accomplishments).
  • And see that the altar of burnt offering was made of Acacia.
  • The “hammered out” acacia covering of the censers of those following Korah was to be a reminder of the struggle that took place with that uprising.

  • This is Solomon’s Temple. Note its grandiosity. This is important to note when noting his overlaying not of acacia but of cypress. Coming.

Habakkuk 2:19

19 Woe to him who says to wood (h6086. עֵץ ‘êṣ), ‘Awake!’

Please see that everything about Solomon’s Temple was grandiose. And representative of the very best of mankind’s workers, and built on the backs of many, many forced laborers. Is there any reason not to see why it had to come down? And why it still stands destroyed, as a memorial, a reminder? Compare that with the building of the Tabernacle, which was built of materials that were brought by people with a willing heart, of things that represented the struggles in mankind’s lives.

Job 1:7

This writer is in the midst of a very extensive look at the very common word שתי, to discern where it fits in this discussion. Therefore, this discussion is not yet complete. שתי is the form of the word שנים, which means “two,” when two is used as an adjective modifying a feminine noun (construct form). The construct form when it is modifying a masculine noun is שני. The construct forms would literally be translated as “two of,” so for the feminine, as in “two wives,” in Genesis 4:19, it is שתי, literally “two of wives.” In Genesis 29:3 two rams is שני, literally “two of rams.”

Sometimes a different formation is used, without the construct, but two absolutes side by side, as in two tables (masculine noun שלחן) where it is the standard form שנים (Ezekiel 40:39&40).

Part of the holdup is in trying to sort this all out – apologies.

However, there is another discussion to include here that may in the future tie in, by way of קדש. We have looked much at קדש previously, including the מקדש, miqdash, Sanctuary.

A brief introduction as an explanation. Devoted things חרם are things which are devoted to God, which means they are to be completely destroyed, not kept for man’s use. They are, in a way, like a burnt offering, an olah, עלה or עולה, completely given over to God. King Saul’s failure with the Amalekites was in not destroying completely as instructed. This is emphasized as a reminder by Samuel’s dealing with Agag in 1 Samuel 15. Below is the only time that קדש and חרם are used together. Achan is referenced several times before, on the website, including Post 14. Synthetic Grasp of Life.

Joshua 7:10-13 (ESV The Sin of Achan)

10 The LORD said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face? 11 Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things (h2764. חֵרֶם ḥêrem); they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings. 12 Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction (h2764. חֵרֶם ḥêrem). Things that are devoted to destruction are things that will make you weak, which are reliance on anything other than God. You feel as if they make you powerful, but they only weaken. Only the LORD יהוה gives real strength, and only when one turns the flow of things over to him, not trying to control things oneself.

  • Yes, even the most common word for sin appears in the Tabernacle. But note, as pointed out by von Rad (see Post 14. Synthetic Grasp of Life) it is not just the act, but the consequences of the act, which is why it is so necessary to be in a world in which God could dwell with us.

The reader might definitely see aspects of breaking physically/emotionally in the heading “sinning extensively.”

  • Personal commentary here. This very word לץ/לוץ explains so well the raison d’etre (reason for existence) of Log and Speck. It is Post 01. Leave Scripture UnchangedIn that post were shared many, many verses telling us readers that very thing. We are not to manipulate speech, most especially God’s Word, to apply pressure on others. Let’s just do what Chan and Strauch and Spurgeon (see Post 04. Interpretation Overview) and many other great teachers have taught us, dig deep, meditate on it, and lift out of the Word, not read into it.
  • One more interesting thought here. Look at a cognate, h3870. לוּז lûz
  •  Genesis 28:19
  • 19 And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously.      Bethel, the house of God, is to take the place of לוז.

AND VERY IMPORTANT TO SEE not only “purify” in the definition here, but “bear a loss.” This is why Moses told Aaron and Eleazar not to mourn in Lv10:6 at the loss of Nadab and Abihu. This is why the silence in Is53:5-12 (see “silent” in verse 7). We are to bear our losses and not complain, knowing that God is in control of the flow of things.

  • The book of Judges has some of the saddest history in Scripture. One very sad one is in chapters 19 and 20, but chapter 21 brings redemption. And as always, with the LORD (יהוה), there is teaching for good. Reminiscent of the War Between the States in U.S. history.

All of the offerings were, of course, offered in the Tabernacle, the purpose of which is to קרב draw closer to God.

Clearing the picture, and recalling von Rad’s discussion of the Synthetic Grasp the Scripture explains, this is very, very deep psychology. And Paul explains it well in one of his Romans soliloquies. Deep inside we know when we have sinned. That knowledge deep within weakens us, taking us away from the strength that confidence/faith in God can bring. Sin has many faces, including some of those referenced just above, including our strengths, when we rely on them too much. Recall Egypt is anything of the world.

Isaiah 31:1

1 Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help

and rely on horses,

who trust in chariots because they are many

and in horsemen because they are very strong,

but do not look to the Holy One of Israel

or consult the LORD!

See the ten times that ארץ (most often “land”) is translated as “world” in ESV,world[h0776][ארצ], generally referring to inhabited world or kingdoms of the world. Like Egypt, or like the “so-called First World.” And see the צר in both מצרים and in ארץ. See the laments for Tyre. Look instead, to the Holy One of Israel; consult the LORD יהוה.

As one returns to the idea of overlaying Acacia, there are likely many ways to interpret it, appropriate to our lives. Perhaps two important messages lie here, in addition to whatever else the reader may glean. The first is that the underlying structure of whatever the overlaying is, is Acacia, the scourging, the struggles of life that we must overcome, and bear the loss. The other important thing is that whatever is on the surface is likely covering a lot of the results of those struggles, the scars of life. As we go through life we must get to know others, that we may see not only the overlying shininess (or grumpiness, or whatever is on the surface), but also the underlying sins and struggles. And likely the only way you will get to see that is if you share your own Acacias with others as you get to know them one on one, face to face, mouth.

Much yet upon which to meditate.
