Please know that I have been investigating and writing extensively since the last entry, and each “answer” brings many more questions. Connecting threads are more than can be imagined. There is much more, but I stop here to get something out. There will (LORD willing), be more to come. Hopefully this will pique your interest enough to look forward to more. 

  • In investigating the idea of motion/movement in the Hebrew letters (see in indigo above), several letters seemed to function in relation to motion. During that investigation, in looking at the roots given as examples in EDBH, came the discovery that there is no listed root פסע (see in lighter blue above). Its counterpart, פסח, is the root for Pesach/Passover, which is the “mother” of all the Hebrew festivals. The grounding thought here is to try to understand Pesach/Passover, and the to contrast it with פסע, given here as “prime examples.” Pesach is the festival underway at the entry of a small band of followers and one “riding on a donkey, a colt, the goal of a donkey,” into Jerusalem/Yerushalayim. (Zh9:9; Mt21:5) Read through Exodus 12, where we first see Pesach. Note it occurs in the month that is “the beginning of months,” which is אביב Abib or Aviv, the month of the ripening of barley.
  • Barley is first encountered in Scripture during the “plagues” on Egypt. Read Ex9:22-35 re: the plague of hail (h1259. בָּרָד ḇârâḏ), and see 
  • Exodus 9:31-32
  • 31 Now the flax and the barley (h8184. שְׂעֹרָה śe‘ôrâ) were struck, for the barley(h8184. שְׂעֹרָה śe‘ôrâ) was in the head and the flax was in bud. 32 But the wheat and the spelt were not struck, for they are late crops.

  • The life advice here, by the way, in Exodus 9:31-2, is not to be the first to jump into something, not to be overly anxious to get involved, IF you don’t want to be struck by hail. But perhaps we should look at the root for h1259. בָּרָד ḇârâḏ, the word for hail, to make sure we are getting the right message.

▸ H1258. בָּרַד bāraḏ: A verb meaning to hail. It depicts a devastating storm that would lay a forest low (Isa. 32:19) as part of God’s reconstruction program.

▸ H1259. בָּרָד bārāḏ: A masculine noun denoting hail or hailstones. The word is used to describe hail that came down as the seventh plague of Egypt (Ex. 9:18, 19, 22-26, 28, 29; Ps. 78:47, 48; 105:32), large enough to kill cattle, plants, and trees, nearly devastating the land (Ex. 10:5, 12, 15). Hailstones were a terrifying weapon of and accompaniment of the Lord’s appearances (Josh. 10:11; Ps. 18:12 [13], 13[14]). The Lord stored up these hailstones (Job 38:22) and discharged them at His will (Isa. 28:2, 17; Hag. 2:17) as His teaching and destructive agents.

A town (Gen. 16:14). An Ephraimite (1 Chr. 7:20).

▸ H1261. בָּרֹד bārōḏ: An adjective referring to something mottled, spotted, speckled, dappled. It refers to male goats and sheep (Gen. 31:10, 12) with this coloring and to horses drawing one of the chariots in Zechariah’s vision (6:3, 6).   • Impetuous Peter must be humbled in order to be of use to the LORD. Yet, it is the humbled Peter who is used. 
  • The storm must be calmed. The city must be laid low.

  • The Hebrew word for mouth is h6310. פֶּה p̱e. You can see how these various definitions tend to revolve around functions of the mouth. From looking at all the roots beginning with פ, it does appear that it is important to include the concepts of opening and beginning. And with ב indicating being “in” a state of whatever we are in, as with ברד, being “in” a state of reconstruction, being “in the state of” being rendered pliable or humbled to another’s control, and פ and ב being phonetic cognates, i.e. both labials, and having similar meanings, the idea of פopening or beginning that process would fit. (We must at a later time go into the tie-in here to בושshame, but that is not for now.)
  • Where I was led was in pondering, “if פ is opening or beginning something,” and that “something” is סע, what would סע be? Which s what brought me to this point.

On pp.28-29 of The Ancient Hebrew Alphabet of the Bible, Benner goes through the derivation of the samech and indicates the original symbol was for a thorn, whence the meanings he lists. The idea of shield and protection come from the idea of forming an enclosure of thorns to protect the flock.

Similar ideas are still used in more modern times in some non-industrialized societies.

  • The same idea is used in barbed-wire fences in industrialized societies. The important point is that it works both ways, like the double-edged sword. It helps to keep out predators, and it helps to contain the flock, to keep them from wandering. Do you see the way what is here a picture of something physical also has symbolism on another level? Thorns are consequences. Some of the most well-known verses hint at the same idea. See Psalm 23:4 and Acts 26:14. The idea of consequences built in to the design of Creation is to help keep out even worse occurrences and to help protect us from ourselves. Think of the toddler first encountering a hot stove. The burned fingertip is a consequence of touching the stove. It helps protect the child from even worse burns. This is how we learn. This learning is the ע part of סע. The “motion” of ע is the sight and insight, the seeing, watching, knowledge gained from encountering the ס the thorn, the painful experience, the rod, staff, and goad. We must have pain receptors for our own protection; we must then learn from the experience and make it a part of our memory. There is an old saying in the therapy world, “no pain/no gain.”
  • So if פ is the opening or beginning, then the word פסע (not in Scripture) to step, means to begin that experience. The hope of the LORD (יהוה) expressed in Scripture is that we “limp,” are lame פסח, that we learn before going farther with our stepping – restricting the very motion created by the experiential knowledge. The LORD’s desire is, as with any parent, we would learn the boundaries, the warning signs, and not proceed into territory that will be much more harmful to us in the long run. Remember the subtitle of the website Log and Speck: Tools for Understanding the Revelation of Life in Scripture. Thus we looked at פסע as the step beginning the journey, and then נ being “continue, perpetuation, offspring or heir,” looked to נסע, the continuation of the journey. You will see below the path which this investigation took.

We will not go through all forty-nine occurrences, but highlight a few here of pertinence.

One reason Yeshua knew he had to be killed?

  • Please recognize that these journeys are “taking steps,” and many of the examples here are unwise steps, paths that should not be taken. In such a circumstance, a פסח, a limp, something to make for a “pause,” שבת, may well be the best thing for us.

And see the three listed cognates נגף strike; נקב perforate; and נקף chop off.

Then we get into a cognate permutation, the class of which is hard to remember, with Yod also being a Palatal.

We studied this root a great deal when we investigated Wisdom, Knowledge, and Understanding. It is from such experiences that we get much understanding. They cause memories that penetrate to the core.

We will undoubtedly circle back around at some point to look at Messiah (from משח) as a journey (מסע). We can, by choosing to follow along a certain path, a journey, become quite like messiahs. More definitions yet to come.
