פך Cognate Permutations

A reminder – I go through these manually and could well have missed some. It is not intentional. If ever you find one that I miss, please let me know.

The two-letter words listing at the beginning of the post were started from a listing in the above Application by Zev Clementson,  which was available in 32-bit format but sadly has not been upgraded to 64-bit. My investigations have carried the work on Two-Letter Words further.

And, as is generally the case here, the root definitions are listed from the Etymological Dictionary of Biblical Hebrew (EDBH) Clark/Hirsch.

My own work has been in combining the wisdom of many who have gone before, and hopefully is some help in understanding. Mine is a small part. God’s work is mighty.

  • This is where it gets tricky, as the two examples shown in the entry are actually קין and not קון. In general, EDBH interchanges pretty freely between ו and י. We’ve already commented here before, that, in general this likely works because neither of them tends to change the underlying meaning much, just reinforcing it or making it stronger. 
  • We have shared before, with the example of טוב and יטב, roots with a Vav in the middle position and roots with a Yod in the right hand position “in many cases have identical meanings,” EDBH p.295. When this is combined with the statement from p.299, “words that contain similar consonants have similar meanings, irrespective of the order of the consonants,” this also suggests Vav and Yod interchange. This “irrespective of the order” comment, of course, is the basis behind our permutations work.
  • And there is this:

It is an entirely separate “deep dive” to confirm that this is reasonable. A quick investigation of a couple of roots seems to confirm that it is reasonable. But what is important to recognize is (with the homorganic consonant exchanges that are used routinely) that this would mean כ “like, as” would be a similar meaning to ב “in.” And we have used them in exactly that way, in our investigations. Being “in” something indicates dwelling in something, which would definitely be “like” that something. 

  • If you follow through with this line of thinking, the following root גגג would reasonably fit in (C4), because ג ↔︎ י and ב ↔︎ ו, thus, following the logic of י  ↔︎ ו, then ב ↔︎ ג. Then we would say גגג ↔︎ גבב. 
  • גגג p.35 (protect; cover)  (no cognates listed)
  • It appears to fit in this case, since “protect; cover” fits with “enclose,” but is a “mind-bender,” and would definitely require extensive research. 
  • Using the same logic, בוק p.23 (empty) exert/cease outward movement (B16) would fit in the same group/spectrum, which one could say it does, in a way, as well as all the roots in (B16).
  • And a cognate permutation would theoretically have a similar meaning, in some sense of the word, like יגב p.100 (till the land) prepare (C46)
  • And then we have פיק p.200 (emerge; come out)  (no cognates listed) which would fit the spectrum of restrain/release, that could fit the other roots shared here (if you think of tilling the land and crushing grapes [the two roots for prepare (C46)] as “releasing the potential” of the land and the grapes). And, just my thoughts here, but יבב (ululate; wail) enclose (C4) andקוב (remove essence) enclose (C4) seem to me to fit more in the release end of the spectrum than “enclose.” And think of how the cycles (קוף) bring out the essence, the meaning of life.

  • יתב occurs only in Aramaic in Scripture, according to Strongs, and three times in Daniel chapter 7 has to do with sitting in judgment (in Ezra twice as settling or living, where it could easily refer to sitting in judgment, used in conjunction with leaders). It is said in Strongs to correspond to ישב in Hebrew (see ישב entry below in (C56)). The “container” noun referred to in the example in Gn6:14 for יתב is the ark תבה of Noah (and is the basket into which Moses is placed in the Nile). Strongs says “perhaps of foreign origin.” EDBH is saying the noun תבה is derived from the root יתב, with the feminine ending ה. We have witnessed these differences between Strongs and EDBH in other situations. The three occurrences of יתב in Daniel are actually in the section of Daniel that is written mostly in Hebrew. (The first six chapters of Daniel are mostly Aramaic, the second six chapters are mostly Hebrew.)

  • These last two, קוט and קפד seem at first glance to be opposite of “open and receptive,” and would suggest perhaps that C17 should be a spectrum of receptivity, BUT these are very, very important to understand in the Biblical view to fit with the rest. This can only be understood by first looking at the referent verses in the EDBH entries (Ek36:31; Is38:12; Ek7:25; Is14:23) and then by remembering the discussion we have had before about טמא “unclean,” and separation (remember the time Miriam is put outside the camp in Numbers 12). Being separate is a time of receptivity, of being made aware of something we are supposed to “see.” It is a time for reflection. It is the time sitting on a stool facing the corner wearing the “Dunce cap.” It is a time of realization. Particularly see Ezekiel 36:31. The detesting/loathing is of oneself. It is guilt, our conscience speaking to us. It is the very key component of allowing God’s communication with us to sink in. Time of quiet. Time of reflection. “Be open and receptive.” Perhaps (and again, one should be extremely cautious about dissecting the Name of יהוה !) one reason הוה p.57 exist; bring into being would be proceeded by the Yod of being open and receptive. The God of consequences. The consequences are our time to reflect, in humility, even humiliation. It only works if we allow our conscience to be active. Free will. Did the U.S. as a country learn anything from 9-11? There was a quiet time, a time set aside. Did we have a collective conscience and look to consider a change in our direction? Was it a “coincidence” that the towers brought down were both the tallest buildings AND the center of our commerce, our current “god?” Very little changed. We did not get the message that our pride and haughtiness were not received well in the world (I really hope you listened to the Toldot podcast I shared with you about Isaac and his wells). No change. Now we have had another “quiet time” of COVID. Have we listened? Or are we going to need another time “set aside,” which might be more far-reaching yet?

  • When I put קלף into the Google online Hebrew to English translator, which gives the modern Hebrew, it is translated as “Judaica.” I ask you personally to interpret the wording here of Judaica and “peel.” If you go to Webster’s, the definition of Judaica is “literary or historical materials relating to Jews or Judaism.” Think of this as including traditions. Think of the verb “peel” as in peeling back the layers of an onion, or peeling some fruit to get at what is inside. Or if the noun, the peel, the container for the delicacy within. What we have been doing and hope to continue to do here is to get to the beauty of what is underlying the Word of God, to peel back the layers for you to understand what lies within, and understand “the revelation of life” therein.

  • I am impelled to comment here even though explorations are not yet complete, for the message is becoming so very clear to me at this point. (First, note marked with are those that are cognate permutations of the root נקב for female. Those for male I will in future tag with .In the listing for (A4) pressure above, I noted that אבי, “my father,” would fit in that group. Note here that יאב is a permutation of אבי, and see the meaning open up (C44). I have had my eye on נקבה femaleand זכר male for explorations for a long time, but have only gotten glimpses. What I have seen, and why I posted in the Appendices, the investigations of Mother and Father, is precisely what is being revealed to me here once again. It is really the role of Motherhood that defines, brings out the true character, of woman, and the role of Fatherhood that defines, brings out the true character of man. Parenting is hard. There is great “pressure (A4)” and it “opens us up (C44),” in terms of looking at the Father role (we can search for similar with Mother in the future, the good LORD willing). Parenting shows our true colors. We either embrace it or run from it. It is the pressure in our lives, the struggling with God and with men, that shows whether we are “Israel” or not. 
  • We will not argue at the moment whether it should be ישׂראל or ישראל. The אל part is God or strength. The other three letters could be related to expand/limit (C22), unify/separate (E14), block/express movement (E18), project outward (E30), apply/withhold pressure (E34) (cognates of various variants from the families). These would be done together with God once one has become Israel. It is all about Joseph being increase/continue, and eventually the increase/continue tends to come to haughtiness and hubris. We must be able to face change in our lives and not get “settled” until God leads us to being settled. As the podcast said, to “remove ourselves.” I’ve had to learn this lesson myself in life, and continue to learn. Living in tents. Being willing to give up where we think we are settled. It is, once again the assumptive reasoning, the Log in our eye.
  • I return to the word David Block and Imu Shalev pointed out in the podcast, “removed,” which is עתק. The EDBH listing is p.195 עתק (move; transfer by force) separate (A58). Recall the discussion above about טמא, a time for separation, a time for reflection. This is a voluntary change of direction, a choice to go where God wants us to go, not where we want to be. This has been the full exercise of doing an investigation of a two letter word, with all (that I could find) of the roots that include it and its cognate permutations, for the two-letter word פך. The word occurs three times.

We showed the entire variant family from EDBH at the top section. EDBH doesn’t even list פכה as a root, and its appearances in Scripture are as a part of a longer word, as הפכה and שפכה. The first is covered in הפך the Derivational Variant above. The second is from שפך seen as one of our roots above, having to do with pouring out. One time it represents the male organ, one time the shedding of blood. The word פךwas chosen for two reasons, one in that it has to do with anointing. Another is that it has to do with a descendant of Shem important in the genealogies, which will be further explored at a later time, LORD (יהוה) willing, 

This is the process gone through in posting the words אם Mother and אב Father in the Appendices. I am doing this background work extensively to help with understanding. The work itself is tedious, and for you, I’m sure quite dry. I will not expect you as reader to wade through each of them, but as you can see, each dive I do seems to bring out some commentary, some “flow” that feels to me to be inspired, but feel free to accept or reject.
