Continuing the theme on the Tabernacle from earlier, important to share this word, as it is by understanding this word that we may begin to understand the idea of boundaries, an important life concept. In order for the LORD (יהוה) to be able to dwell שכן with us, our lives must have boundaries/restraints.

Exodus 27:9-15 – (NKJV – The Court of the Tabernacle Ex. 38:9–20)

9 “You shall also make the court of the tabernacle. For the south side (there shall behangings (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘) for the court made of fine woven linen, one hundred cubits long for one side. 10 And its twenty pillars and their twenty sockets (shall be) bronze. The hooks of the pillars and their bands (shall be) silver. 11 Likewise along the length of the north side (there shall behangings (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘) one hundred (cubits) long, with its twenty pillars and their twenty sockets of bronze, and the hooks of the pillars and their bands of silver.

12 “And along the width of the court on the west side (shall behangings (h7050. קֶלַעqela‘) of fifty cubits, with their ten pillars and their ten sockets. 13 The width of the court on the east side (shall be) fifty cubits. 14 The hangings (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘) on (one) side (of the gate shall be) fifteen cubits, with their three pillars and their three sockets. 15 And on the other side (shall behangings (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘) of fifteen cubits, with their three pillars and their three sockets.    – other translations use the word curtains = hangings – just be aware that there are two different words used in these chapters.   • (Not sure of the significance, because Hebrew Scripture certainly does at times leave out a word or phrase that is to be “understood” in reading, or at least so have we been taught. But note that in verse 11 for the north side and in verse 13 for the east side, the word קלע does not actually appear, but is added in by NKJV. Which would certainly lead one to further study. Much earlier we talked about different words for directions (in Post 03. Hebrew Thought, under Spatial and Time Orientation). The word here for north is צפון, and the word for east is קדם. South is נגב. West is ים. Did Moses purposely change the instructions given by the LORD (יהוה) and why? What is Torah telling us here?)

Personally, I think there is a message here, but you be the judge. From God’s perspective, what would you think we need boundaries on?

Exodus 39:32-41

32 Thus all the work of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting was finished. And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD had commanded Moses; so they did. 33 And they brought the tabernacle to Moses, the tent and all its furnishings: its clasps, its boards, its bars, its pillars, and its sockets; 34 the covering of ram skins dyed red, the covering of badger skins, and the veil of the covering; 35 the ark of the Testimony with its poles, and the mercy seat; 36 the table, all its utensils, and the showbread; 37 the pure (gold) lampstand with its lamps (the lamps set in order), all its utensils, and the oil for light; 38 the gold altar, the anointing oil, and the sweet incense; the screen for the tabernacle door; 39 the bronze altar, its grate of bronze, its poles, and all its utensils; the laver with its base; 40 the hangings (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘) of the court, its pillars and its sockets, the screen for the court gate, its cords, and its pegs; all the utensils for the service of the tabernacle, for the tent of meeting; 41 and the garments of ministry, to minister in the holy (place): the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and his sons’ garments, to minister as priests.

Numbers 3:21-26

21 From Gershon (came) the family of the Libnites and the family of the Shimites; these were the families of the Gershonites. 22 Those who were numbered, according to the number of all the males from a month old and above—of those who were numbered (there were) seven thousand five hundred. 23 The families of the Gershonites were to camp behind the tabernacle westward. 24 And the leader of the father’s house of the Gershonites (was) Eliasaph the son of Lael. 25 The duties of the children of Gershon in the tabernacle of meeting (included) the tabernacle, the tent with its covering, the screen for the door of the tabernacle of meeting, 26 the screen for the door of the court, the hangings (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘) of the court which (are) around the tabernacle and the altar, and their cords, according to all the work relating to them.

Numbers 4:21-26

21 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 22 “Also take a census of the sons of Gershon, by their fathers’ house, by their families. 23 From thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, you shall number them, all who enter to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of meeting. 24 This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and carrying: 25 They shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle and the tabernacle of meeting (with) its covering, the covering of badger skins that is on it, the screen for the door of the tabernacle of meeting, 26 the screen for the door of the gate of the court, the hangings (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘) of the court which (are) around the tabernacle and altar, and their cords, all the furnishings for their service and all that is made for these things: so shall they serve.

1 Samuel 17:40

40 Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘) was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine.

1 Samuel 17:50

50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘) and a stone (h0068. אֶבֶן ’eḇen), and struck the Philistine and killed him. But (there was) no sword in the hand of David.

1 Samuel 25:29

29 Yet a man has risen to pursue you and seek your life, but the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living with the LORD your God; and the lives of your enemies He shall sling (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘) out, (as from) the pocket of a sling (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘).

1 Kings 6:31-35  of the Temple

31 For the entrance of the inner sanctuary he made doors (of) olive wood; the lintel (and) doorposts (were) one-fifth (of the wall). 32 The two doors (were of) olive wood; and he carved on them figures of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold; and he spread gold on the cherubim and on the palm trees. 33 So for the door of the sanctuary he also made doorposts of olive wood, one-fourth of the wall. 34 And the two doors were of cypress wood; two panels comprised one folding door, and two panels (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘) comprised the other folding door. 35 Then he carved cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers on them, and overlaid them with gold applied evenly on the carved work.

  • Before we move any further, do you see the contrast between the Tabernacle and the Temple? The entire Tabernacle משכן space was defined by the קלע, the boundaries, the limits, of the place where the LORD could dwell with us. In the Temple is a token conciliation, a brief “mention” of קלע. The lifestyle/worldview of Shlomo/Solomon was not one of קלע/boundaries. Does any of this pertain to our lives? Is it a puzzle why the Temple would necessarily be destroyed? Not one stone upon another.

2 Chronicles 26:11-15

11 Moreover Uzziah had an army of fighting men who went out to war by companies, according to the number on their roll as prepared by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the king’s captains. 12 The total number of chief officers of the mighty men of valor (was) two thousand six hundred. 13 And under their authority (was) an army of three hundred and seven thousand five hundred, that made war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy. 14 Then Uzziah prepared for them, for the entire army, shields, spears, helmets, body armor, bows, and slings (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘) (to cast) stones (h0068. אֶבֶן ’eḇen). 15 And he made devices in Jerusalem, invented by skillful men, to be on the towers and the corners, to shoot arrows and large stones (h0068. אֶבֶן ’eḇen). So his fame spread far and wide, for he was marvelously helped till he became strong.

Job 41:28

28 The arrow cannot make him flee;

Sling (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘) stones (h0068. אֶבֶן ’eḇen) become like stubble to him.

Zechariah 9:15

15 The LORD of hosts will defend them;

They shall devour and subdue with sling (h7050. קֶלַע qela‘) stones (h0068. אֶבֶן’eḇen).

They shall drink and roar as if with wine;

They shall be filled with blood like basins,

Like the corners of the altar.

A few more points to tie together re: this topic. The other word used extensively in the Tabernacle discussion for curtains is h3407. יְרִיעָה yerîy‘â; from h3415. יָרַע yâra‘. Its meaning is very similar, again pointing to boundaries:

Ex. 26:1-10,12,13; 36:8-17; Num. 4:25; 2 Sam. 7:2; 1 Chr. 17:1; Ps. 104:2; Song 1:5; Isa. 54:2; Jer. 4:20; 10:20; 49:29; Hab. 3:7.

The many Exodus occurrences and the Numbers occurrence are in the Tabernacle, by far the most common usage.  The word is not used in the Temple description, and the only mention of it in Solomon’s writings is in Song1:5, and should be read in context. The other important point about ירע is its cognate ירה, which is the root for Torah. Torah the word of the LORD given at Sinai, was the indication of the boundaries of the creation of the God of consequences. 

The passages in Exodus 26 and 36 speak more of HOW elements of the Tabernacle are constructed, and do not speak of directions, north, south, east and west. 

Two more points to be made. The first relates to the first word being investigated here, and its tie-in to קלל “curse.” There is a long litany of curses you may want to read, from Deuteronomy 28:15-68. The opening of the discussion is that with lack of obedience to the boundaries, h7045. קְלָלָה qelâlâ “curses” will follow. It is a description of the way Creation works, the consequences of our actions. I point out specifically verse 47 to you, the critical importance of two things. The first is servingthe LORD (יהוה) your God (as in all your heart all your mind, all your strength). And the second is not grumbling about how hard life is, but serving the LORD with “joy and gladness of heart.” Think about what the passage is saying. Boundaries are placed upon us, and we should be glad and joyful with the boundaries, knowing that God is good, and God’s boundaries are good for us even though they are not necessarily in line with our fleshly desires.

The other point has to do with the other word ירע, and is definitely my own interpretation, which you may feel free to accept or reject. I must give a very brief background of why I came to this. I have seen a number of instances in Scripture where life is proceeding according to God’s plan, and then someone prays/pleads with God to change it. God, being the God of free will sometimes will grant such prayers even being able to see the consequences and knowing they will not be what we had hoped, because God knows well how Creation works, and that we learn from the consequences. Parents will certainly do just that, if they recognize the consequences are not dire (see 1Co10:13). Some of the best examples are prayers for barren wives in Scripture. Others may be Abraham with Sodom, and Moses after the golden calf. That is the lead-in to the following discussion re: יריעה as it relates to our Temple discussion above. I’m sure this will make some people unhappy with me.

The two occurrences of יריעה in 2 Sam. 7:2; 1 Chr. 17:1 are describing the same incident. I will show the one in 2Samuel. Please feel free to look also in 1Chronicles.

2 Samuel 7:1-17 – (NKJV – God’s Covenant with David – 1 Chr. 17:1–15)

1 Now it came to pass when the king was dwelling in his house, and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies all around, 2 that the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains (h3407. יְרִיעָה yerîy‘â).”

3 Then Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.”

4 But it happened that night that the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying, 5 “Go and tell My servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: “Would you build a house for Me to dwell in? 6 For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought the children of Israel up from Egypt, even to this day, but have moved about in a tent and in a tabernacle. 7 Wherever I have moved about with all the children of Israel, have I ever spoken a word to anyone from the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?'”‘ 8 Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel. 9 And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth. 10 Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously, 11 since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies. Also the LORD tells you that He will make you a house.

12 “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. 15 But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.”‘”

17 According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

Now go back and read verse 7. God expresses his desire in verses 6&7. God is very content living in a tent/tabernacle. God never requested a permanent structure. It was David’s desire that led to the building of the Temple by Solomon, it becoming also Solomon’s desire. See the question the LORD (יהוה) poses, “have I ever spoken a word to anyone from the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?'” First see clearly it is not his desire. And secondly, if you look at the wording, house of cedar בית ארזים. Cedar is ארזp.16 root firmly for strong growth, and there is an entire wealth of information in looking at its cognate permutations, but all we will do here is contrast “rooting firmly” with God’s self-description, his “moving about.”

2 Samuel 7:6

The LORD (יהוה) and his messengers/angels, the representatives that are to reflect who he is, walk to and fro. They are active in the world in the lives of people. They have “nowhere to lay their head.” Some test us and some encourage us. But they move about, God, and his messengers.They are not rooted firmly, but always active (see John5:17). Recall long ago we spoke of the word for tent, אהל p.4 radiate in all directions. God is not rooted but walking about, radiating in all directions. Our job is but to be aware (aware of both tests and encouragement), and as above, have joy and gladness as we serve those messages that God radiates.
