that this relates to, Mt12:39, 16:4; Lk11:29-30

① depriving someone of possessions illegally

Exodus 22:21

21(20H) “You shall neither mistreat (h3238. יָנָה yânâ) a stranger nor oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

||

Genesis 9:20-23

20 And Noah began to be a farmer, and he planted a vineyard. 21 Then he drank of the wine(h3196. יַיִן yaiyn) and was drunk, and became uncovered in his tent. 22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.

Genesis 9:21

21 וַיֵּ֥שְׁתְּ מִן־הַיַּ֖יִן וַיִּשְׁכָּ֑ר וַיִּתְגַּ֖ל בְּתֹ֥וךְ אָהֳלֹֽה

{{{Undoubtedly this is the same situation as is noted for Cain and Abel below. There is an understanding of proper protocol toward the LORD (יהוה) even before Torah is given. See the following understanding:

  • Leviticus 19:23-25
  • 23 ‘When you come into the land, and have planted all kinds of trees for food, then you shall count their fruit as uncircumcised. Three years it shall be as uncircumcised to you. It shall not be eaten. 24 But in the fourth year all its fruit shall be holy, a praise to the LORD. 25 And in the fifth year you may eat its fruit, that it may yield to you its increase: I am the LORD your God.}}}

Leviticus 25:13-14

13 In this Year of Jubilee, each of you shall return to his possession. 14 And if you sell anything to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor’s hand, you shall not oppress (h3238. יָנָה yânâ) one another.

② extorting

Leviticus 25:13-17

13 In this Year of Jubilee, each of you shall return to his possession. 14 And if you sell anything to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor’s hand, you shall not oppress one another. 15 According to the number of years after the Jubilee you shall buy from your neighbor, and according to the number of years of crops he shall sell to you. 16 According to the multitude of years you shall increase its price, and according to the fewer number of years you shall diminish its price; for he sells to you according to the number of the years of the crops. 17 Therefore you shall not oppress (h3238. יָנָה yânâ) one another, but you shall fear your God; for I am the LORD your God.

||

Exodus 22:29-30

29(28H) “You shall not delay (to offer) the first of your ripe produce and your juices. The firstborn of your sons (h1121. בֵּן ḇên) you shall give to Me. 30 Likewise you shall do with your oxen (and) your sheep. It shall be with its mother seven days; on the eighth day you shall give it to Me.

Exodus 22:28

28 מְלֵאָתְךָ֥ וְדִמְעֲךָ֖ לֹ֣א תְאַחֵ֑ר בְּכֹ֥ור בָּנֶ֖יךָ תִּתֶּן־לִּֽי׃

  • Two points here. First is the thought that delay in giving to God is seen as extorting/oppressing God. The second is that there is only one word that might fit with ינה, which is sons, h1121. בֵּן ḇên, the only word with a Nun נ. And no doubt the entire issue of birthright and birth order is a huge part of Genesis, and again in Exodus with the nation of Israel as being the firstborn. I definitely do not understand it all, but it would be a good topic for future study. The point about “delay” is likely why יהוה had no regard for Cain’s offering in Gn4:3-4 (In the course of time•••).

③ being weak

Psalms 123:3-4

3 Have mercy on us, O LORD, have mercy on us!

For we are exceedingly filled with contempt.

4 Our soul is exceedingly filled

With the scorn of those who are at ease,

With the contempt of the proud (h1349. גַּאֲיוֹן g̱a’ăyôn).

  • h1349. גַּאֲיוֹן g̱a’ăyôn is h1343. גֵּאֶה g̱ê’eh lofty/proud + h3238. יָנָה yânâ oppress

Think of the prophet Jonah and his attitude toward Nineveh

④ young dove; domesticated bird

Leviticus 1:14-17

14 ‘And if the burnt sacrifice of his offering to the LORD is of birds, then he shall bring his offering of turtledoves or young pigeons (h3123. יוֹנָה yônâ). 15 The priest shall bring it to the altar, wring off its head, and burn (it) on the altar; its blood shall be drained out at the side of the altar. 16 And he shall remove its crop with its feathers and cast it beside the altar on the east side, into the place for ashes. 17 Then he shall split it at its wings, (but) shall not divide (it) completely; and the priest shall burn it on the altar, on the wood that (is) on the fire. It (is) a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the LORD.
