Deuteronomy 12:5

5 כִּ֠י אִֽם־אֶל־הַמָּקֹ֞ום אֲשֶׁר־יִבְחַ֨ר יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֙ מִכָּל־שִׁבְטֵיכֶ֔ם לָשׂ֥וּם אֶת־שְׁמֹ֖ו שָׁ֑ם לְשִׁכְנֹ֥ו תִדְרְשׁ֖וּ וּבָ֥אתָשָֽׁמָּה׃

Deuteronomy 12:5

5 “But you shall seek (h1875. דָּרַשׁ ḏâraš תִדְרְשׁ֖וּ) the place (h4725. מָקוֹם mâqôm) where the LORD your God chooses (h0977. בָּחַר ḇâḥar), out of all your tribes (h7626. שֵׁבֶט šêḇeṭ), to put (h7760. שׂוּם śûm; or שִׂים siym) His name (h8034. שֵׁם šêm) for His dwelling place (h7933. שֶׁכֶן šeḵen); and there (h8033. שָׁם šâm) you shall go (h0935. בּוֹא bô).

Deuteronomy 12:1-8 Young’s Literal Translation 

1 `These [are] the statutes and the judgments which ye observe to do in the land which Jehovah, God of thy fathers, hath given to thee to possess it, all the days that ye are living on the ground: 2 ye do utterly destroy all the places where the nations which ye are dispossessing served their gods, on the high mountains, and on the heights, and under every green tree; 3 and ye have broken down their altars, and shivered their standing pillars, and their shrines ye burn with fire, and graven images of their gods ye cut down, and have destroyed their name out of that place. 4 `Ye do not do so to Jehovah your God; 5 but unto the place which Jehovah your God doth choose out of all your tribes to put His name there, to His tabernacle ye seek, and thou hast entered thither, 6 and hast brought in thither your burnt-offerings, and your sacrifices, and your tithes, and the heave-offering of your hand, and your vows, and your free-will offerings, and the firstlings of your herd and of your flock; 7 and ye have eaten there before Jehovah your God, and have rejoiced in every putting forth of your hand, ye and your households, with which Jehovah thy God hath blessed thee. 8 `Ye do not do according to all that we are doing here to-day, each anything that is right in his own eyes,

Pattern h8403. תַּבְנִית ṯaḇniyṯ; from h1129. בָּנָה ḇânâ

We will explore two possibilities, first the more traditional, with the root בנה. Note the תprefix and suffix. One might consider doubly the “mark” of what is meant by בנה. So, when you see where the discussion is going later, you might see this thought reflected in two other places in Scripture. First mark, it might be speaking of forming ourselves in the likeness of God. And the second mark, forming our children (in the broad sense) in the likeness of God. 

First, from the Shema, the twice-daily prayer recited in Judaism. Note how we are to be formed, and how we are to form our children:

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

4 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. 

Other witnesses/connections would be expressed in why God chose Abram:

Genesis 18:19

19 For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice, that the LORD may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.”

And another witness would be:

Deuteronomy 4:9-10

9 Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren, 10 especially concerning the day you stood before the LORD your God in Horeb, when the LORD said to me, ‘Gather the people to Me, and I will let them hear My words, that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.’   Horeb very important to return to••• study Michtam

So, we are to make a holy place where God may dwell with us. The nature of that holy place is being ourselves “formed” in the LORD (יהוה), and in forming those around us (our literal children, but also  others in our sphere of influence in our lives). This is the מקדש = the משכןMishkan. 

Two thoughts from the Greek Scriptures to consider in conjunction with this discussion:

John 2:18-21

18 So the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?”

19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”

21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Have we created a holy space for ourselves and those in our immediate environment that God may dwell with/within us?

Soon I will share with you insights about this Mishkan from recent study, that have helped me so much. Note, there are experts in the study of the Mishkan/Tabernacle. I claim no such expertise, only what has come to me in the study of the words, just as we have been doing.
