66 Heighten Attention

There will be one more entry to follow number 66 in the “Attention” series, but again this had more of a sense of urgency, and it fits right in with the topic. At a later time I hopefully will get to connect this word for “window” ארבה with the cognate חרב, which we have discussed before (as sword and parch).

Genesis 7:11-12

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows (h0699. אֲרֻבָּה ’ăruḇâ) of heaven (h8064. שָׁמַיִם šâmaiym) were opened. 12 And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights.

h0699 + h8064 five occurrences in ESV and NKJV, so one of the above has different Strongs numbers – the Isaiah verse, which we will examine below.

Genesis 8:1-19

The Flood Subsides

1 But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the livestock that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided. 2 The fountains of the deep and the windows (h0699. אֲרֻבָּה ’ăruḇâ) of the heavens (h8064. שָׁמַיִם šâmaiym) were closed, the rain from the heavens (h8064. שָׁמַיִם šâmaiym) was restrained, 3 and the waters receded from the earth continually. At the end of 150 days the waters had abated, 4 and in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. 5 And the waters continued to abate until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains were seen.

6 At the end of forty days Noah opened the window of the ark that he had made 7 and sent forth a raven. It went to and fro until the waters were dried up from the earth. 8 Then he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters had subsided from the face of the ground. 9 But the dove found no place to set her foot, and she returned to him to the ark, for the waters were still on the face of the whole earth. So he put out his hand and took her and brought her into the ark with him. 10 He waited another seven days, and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark. 11 And the dove came back to him in the evening, and behold, in her mouth was a freshly plucked olive leaf. So Noah knew that the waters had subsided from the earth. 12 Then he waited another seven days and sent forth the dove, and she did not return to him anymore.

13 In the six hundred and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried from off the earth. And Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and behold, the face of the ground was dry. 14 In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth had dried out. 15 Then God said to Noah, 16 “Go out from the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh—birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth—that they may swarm on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” 18 So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him. 19 Every beast, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out by families from the ark.

2 Kings 7:1-19

Elisha Promises Food

1 But Elisha said, “Hear the word of the LORD: thus says the LORD, Tomorrow about this time a seah of fine flour shall be sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria.” 2 Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned said to the man of God, “If the LORD himself should make windows (h0699. אֲרֻבָּה ’ăruḇâ) in heaven (h8064. שָׁמַיִםšâmaiym), could this thing be?” But he said, “You shall see it with your own eyes, but you shall not eat of it.”

The Syrians Flee

3 Now there were four men who were lepers at the entrance to the gate. And they said to one another, “Why are we sitting here until we die? 4 If we say, ‘Let us enter the city,’ the famine is in the city, and we shall die there. And if we sit here, we die also. So now come, let us go over to the camp of the Syrians. If they spare our lives we shall live, and if they kill us we shall but die.” 5 So they arose at twilight to go to the camp of the Syrians. But when they came to the edge of the camp of the Syrians, behold, there was no one there. 6 For the Lord had made the army of the Syrians hear the sound of chariots and of horses, the sound of a great army, so that they said to one another, “Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Egypt to come against us.” 7 So they fled away in the twilight and abandoned their tents, their horses, and their donkeys, leaving the camp as it was, and fled for their lives. 8 And when these lepers came to the edge of the camp, they went into a tent and ate and drank, and they carried off silver and gold and clothing and went and hid them. Then they came back and entered another tent and carried off things from it and went and hid them.

9 Then they said to one another, “We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news. If we are silent and wait until the morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come; let us go and tell the king’s household.” 10 So they came and called to the gatekeepers of the city and told them, “We came to the camp of the Syrians, and behold, there was no one to be seen or heard there, nothing but the horses tied and the donkeys tied and the tents as they were.” 11 Then the gatekeepers called out, and it was told within the king’s household. 12 And the king rose in the night and said to his servants, “I will tell you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we are hungry. Therefore they have gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the open country, thinking, ‘When they come out of the city, we shall take them alive and get into the city.’” 13 And one of his servants said, “Let some men take five of the remaining horses, seeing that those who are left here will fare like the whole multitude of Israel who have already perished. Let us send and see.” 14 So they took two horsemen, and the king sent them after the army of the Syrians, saying, “Go and see.” 15 So they went after them as far as the Jordan, and behold, all the way was littered with garments and equipment that the Syrians had thrown away in their haste. And the messengers returned and told the king.

16 Then the people went out and plundered the camp of the Syrians. So a seah of fine flour was sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, according to the word of the LORD. 17 Now the king had appointed the captain on whose hand he leaned to have charge of the gate. And the people trampled him in the gate, so that he died, as the man of God had said when the king came down to him. 18 For when the man of God had said to the king, “Two seahs of barley shall be sold for a shekel, and a seah of fine flour for a shekel, about this time tomorrow in the gate of Samaria,” 19 the captain had answered the man of God, “If the LORD himself should make windows (h0699. אֲרֻבָּה ’ăruḇâ) in heaven (h8064. שָׁמַיִםšâmaiym), could such a thing be?” And he had said, “You shall see it with your own eyes, but you shall not eat of it.”

Malachi 2:10 – 3:18

Judah Profaned the Covenant

10 Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us? Why then are we faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our fathers? 11 Judah has been faithless, and abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem. For Judah has profaned the sanctuary of the LORD, which he loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign god. 12 May the LORD cut off from the tents of Jacob any descendant of the man who does this, who brings an offering to the LORD of hosts!

13 And this second thing you do. You cover the LORD’S altar with tears, with weeping and groaning because he no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. 14 But you say, “Why does he not?” Because the LORD was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant. 15 Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union? And what was the one God seeking? Godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth. 16 “For the man who does not love his wife but divorces her, says the LORD, the God of Israel, covers his garment with violence, says the LORD of hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless.”

The Messenger of the LORD

17 You have wearied the LORD with your words. But you say, “How have we wearied him?” By saying, “Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delights in them.” Or by asking, “Where is the God of justice?”

1 “Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. 2 But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the LORD. 4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.

5 “Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the LORD of hosts.

Robbing God

6 “For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. 7 From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. But you say, ‘How shall we return?’ 8 Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. 9 You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. 10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows (h0699. אֲרֻבָּה ’ăruḇâ) of heaven (h8064. שָׁמַיִם šâmaiym) for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. 11 I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil, and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the LORD of hosts. 12 Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the LORD of hosts.

13 “Your words have been hard against me, says the LORD. But you say, ‘How have we spoken against you?’ 14 You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God. What is the profit of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the LORD of hosts? 15 And now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the test and they escape.’”

The Book of Remembrance

16 Then those who feared the LORD spoke with one another. The LORD paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the LORD and esteemed his name. 17 “They shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts, in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. 18 Then once more you shall see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.

Malachi

Introduction

Although the urging of Haggai and Zechariah had brought the completion of the temple (516 B.C.), this had not produced the messianic age many expected. The warm response to Zechariah’s call to repentance had grown cold, because God apparently had not restored the covenant blessings. Malachi, writing a short time later, called the people to repentance with respect to: the priesthood, which had become corrupt; worship, which had become routine; divorce, which was widespread; social justice, which was being ignored; and tithing, which was neglected. “Will man rob God?” the Lord asked through Malachi (3:8), and he promised to “open the windows of heaven” (v. 10) for those who pay their full tithe. Malachi predicted the coming of both John the Baptist and Jesus, referring to each as a “messenger” of God (3:1).

What is a Window to Heaven?

The verse in Isaiah translated as windows of heaven, not appearing in the h0699 + h8064 search.

Here we are “playing one of the favorite scriptural games,” a technique Rabbi David Fohrman at AlephBeta calls, after the Sesame Street song, “One of these Things is not Like the Others•••”

Isaiah 24

Judgment on the Whole Earth

1 Behold, the LORD will empty the earth and make it desolate,

and he will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants.

2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest;

as with the slave, so with his master;

as with the maid, so with her mistress;

as with the buyer, so with the seller;

as with the lender, so with the borrower;

as with the creditor, so with the debtor.

3 The earth shall be utterly empty and utterly plundered;

for the LORD has spoken this word.

4 The earth mourns and withers;

the world languishes and withers;

the highest people of the earth languish.

5 The earth lies defiled

under its inhabitants;

for they have transgressed the laws,

violated the statutes,

broken the everlasting covenant.

6 Therefore a curse devours the earth,

and its inhabitants suffer for their guilt;

and the foundations of the earth tremble.

it sways like a hut;

and it falls, and will not rise again.

Understand that the nature of the “One of these Things is not Like the Others” technique is to get one’s attention, to focus on the “different” one. We will undoubtedly learn a lot from that focus. Immediately multiple “tools” or thoughts come to my mind, as I hope they do for you, as you have begun to think Hebraically. I will mention some••• you may well know others to lead in a direction of further study. 

▶︎ Immediately my mind went to names, such as Miriam, who of course is the sister of Moses, but also some “Marys” in the Greek Scriptures (GS). Thinking about Miriam helps in recognizing the fine balance in loftiness – she was very respected, a leader. But recall the incident when she crossed over the line in Numbers 12, and her pride/haughtiness led to a week of “leprosy.” It’s easy to consider that she might be seen as “bitter” with the worshipful attitude the people had toward Moses:

▶︎ Another obvious direction in which to go is to see where else this word מרום is used. Strongs lists 54 occurrences (see above). I will not list them all, but the reader should look at them in context to make sense of the meaning. You will see the verses below that EDBH thinks are important to note, but don’t stop there. Explore for yourself to see if you get a similar thrust. I will show just a few that are different from the EDBH-referenced verses.

17 “He sent from on high (h4791. מָרוֹם mârôm), he took me;

he drew me out of many waters.

▶︎ I would also, in doing this, look particularly whether מרום or a related word is used with ארבה, or in parallel with שמים.

There is no other occurrence of h0699 in the same verse with h4791.

H0699 does not occur with h7311. רוּם rûm (or h7312 and h7315, other forms of רום).

There are four occurrences of h8064 + h4791:

19 Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven (h8064. שָׁמַיִם šâmayim),

and he who testifies for me is on high (h4791. מָרוֹם mârôm).

Praise the LORD from the heavens (h8064. שָׁמַיִם šâmayim);

praise him in the heights (h4791. מָרוֹם mârôm)!

2 Praise him, all his angels;

praise him, all his hosts!

53 Though Babylon should mount up to heaven (h8064. שָׁמַיִם šâmayim),

and though she should fortify her strong height (h4791. מָרוֹם mârôm),

yet destroyers would come from me against her,

declares the LORD.

A sense, perhaps, of a position of power. In looking at verses, it appears to be the appropriate place of God, and an inappropriate place for mankind to put itself. “You shall have no other gods before me,” obviously the most common one being ourselves.

▶︎ Another thing that should pique our interest is looking at the derivation of מרום, both in the way that Strongs does, but in other ways as well.

In looking at רום, here is the family:

One interesting word found, from the root רמה in Strongs is מרמה, translated in Gn27:35 as “deceitfully,” of Jacob and his posing as Esau. This might be applied to the situation of Aaron and Miriam in Numbers 12, but not of God.

I know, sometimes thinking of the entire “Family” feels like “too much,” so my suggestion in the beginning is to think of the context and pick one or two roots to delve into more deeply. As I glance over Isaiah 24, my first attempt would be to focus for מר on the Derivational Variant אמר. I’ll give you a few reasons, but you should explore for yourself. In the first verse, there is reference to scattered, h6327. פּוּץ pûṣ, which is seen in various places as scattered or dispersed, especially in Genesis 11:4-9. This is the so-called Tower of Babel incident, which led to the confusion of languages. 

The word h0559. אָמַר ’âmar occurs over 5300 times (and there are other forms/other Strongs numbers), first in Genesis 1:3 “And God said (h0559. אָמַר ’âmar)•••” There are many words about utterances in Isaiah 24, from speaking, to word, to sighing, noise, singing, rejoicing, songs, sound•••

Notice here: 

Isaiah 24:16

16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise,

of glory to the Righteous One.

But I say (h0559. אָמַר ’âmar), “I waste away,

I waste away. Woe is me!

For the traitors have betrayed,

with betrayal the traitors have betrayed.”

I’m definitely not saying this is the only consideration, but a place to begin. Even here, what is “spoken” has the overtone of self-focus, pride, haughtiness. “Woe is me!” Poor little ol’ me••• nobody cares about me. We look out for ourselves above those around us. Look in John 12:5-6 to see the contrast, in John’s presentation, between the motivations of Mary and Judas.

We have already spoken of rain, and the flow of water (actually all flow) coming from God, and rain especially as teaching ((see especially Deuteronomy 32:1-2, definitely contrast with a deluge or a torrent)). If the windows of heaven opened in the destruction of earth at Noah’s time, a flood, a deluge, perhaps translators have used the word heaven here to indicate a similar idea.

נום not listed in GV in EDBH, but fits the pattern  Ps. 76:5(6); 121:3,4; Isa. 5:27; 56:10; Nah. 3:18; Prov. 23:21. 

I will certainly argue that מיי should either belong here in this GV, or is very closely related. We seem to get the idea (as is often the case) of opposites in this group. With מוםמיי, and נום, the more “negative side,” and יום and ימם the more “positive side.” Particularly pertinent are two things: first, see the “also’s,” which pull in cognates and words similar to cognates, but give the clear idea of dissolving; also note the particular verse and even the phrase copied in Hebrew, as the key verse, which includes not only “waters” but “heavens.” 

Which of the roots here might we consider first in looking at מרום, first in the context of Isaiah 24, and then pairing with our root choice אמר above? Translators seem to have focused on the elevation part by using רום as the root. One can easily see the fit with יום, ascend. יום occurs around 2300 times. Its most common translation is as “day,” but can mean time or year. Basically it is a measure of time. So the window of heaven opened here might be seen as a time of some serious teaching/word from God.

We hope that we are in a situation in our lives where our teaching comes as gentle rain, distilled dew. And it does come thus if we only “pay attention.” When we don’t, then something more comes to get our attention. Read thoroughly the “Song of Moses” in Deuteronomy 31:30-32:47. In verse 1 of Ch.32, h0561. אֵמֶר ’êmer introduces the topic, and then h0559. אָמַר ’âmar occurs seven times throughout the song.

We really should be taking heed.
