◉ There is very little commentary in this entry•••

① bowing

Isaiah 44:14-17

14 He cuts down cedars for himself,

And takes the cypress and the oak;

He secures it for himself among the trees of the forest.

He plants a pine, and the rain nourishes it.

15 Then it shall be for a man to burn,

For he will take some of it and warm himself;

Yes, he kindles it and bakes bread;

Indeed he makes a god and worships it;

He makes it a carved image, and falls down (h5456. סָגַד sâg̱aḏ) to it.

16 He burns half of it in the fire;

With this half he eats meat;

He roasts a roast, and is satisfied.

He even warms himself and says,

“Ah! I am warm,

I have seen the fire.”

17 And the rest of it he makes into a god,

His carved image.

He falls down (h5456. סָגַד sâg̱aḏ) before it and worships it,

Prays to it and says,

“Deliver me, for you are my god!”

① paying attention

Deuteronomy 27:9-10

9 Then Moses and the priests, the Levites, spoke to all Israel, saying, “Take heed (h5535. סָכַת sâḵaṯ) and listen, O Israel: This day you have become the people of the LORD your God. 10 Therefore you shall obey the voice of the LORD your God, and observe His commandments and His statutes which I command you today.”

Leviticus 26:1

1 ‘You shall not make idols for yourselves;

neither a carved image nor a sacred pillar shall you rear up for yourselves;

nor shall you set up an engraved (h4906. מַשְׂכִּית maśḵiyṯ) stone in your land, to bow down to it;

for I am the LORD your God.

① being startled into energetic thought

Psalms 102:6-7

6 I am like a pelican of the wilderness;

I am like an owl of the desert.

7 I lie awake (h8245. שָׁקַד šâqaḏ),

And am like a sparrow alone on the housetop.

Jeremiah 1:11-12

11 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?”

And I said, “I see a branch of an almond (h8247. שָׁקֵד šâqêḏ) tree.”

12 Then the LORD said to me, “You have seen well, for I am ready (h8245. שָׁקַד šâqaḏ) to perform My word.”

② concentrated watching

Psalms 127:1

A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon.

1 Unless the LORD builds the house,

They labor in vain who build it;

Unless the LORD guards the city,

The watchman stays awake (h8245. שָׁקַד šâqaḏ) in vain.

+

Psalms 94:12-13

12 Blessed is the man whom You instruct, O LORD,

And teach out of Your law,

13 That You may give him rest from the days of adversity,

Until the pit (h7845. שַׁחַת šaḥaṯ) is dug for the wicked.

③ urging forward

Jeremiah 1:11-19

11 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?”

And I said, “I see a branch of an almond (h8247. שָׁקֵד šâqêḏ) tree.”

12 Then the LORD said to me, “You have seen well, for I am ready (h8245. שָׁקַד šâqaḏ) to perform My word.”

13 And the word of the LORD came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?”

And I said, “I see a boiling pot, and it is facing away from the north.”

14 Then the LORD said to me:

“Out of the north calamity shall break forth

On all the inhabitants of the land.

15 For behold, I am calling

All the families of the kingdoms of the north,” says the LORD;

“They shall come and each one set his throne

At the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem,

Against all its walls all around,

And against all the cities of Judah.

16 I will utter My judgments

Against them concerning all their wickedness,

Because they have forsaken Me,

Burned incense to other gods,

And worshiped the works of their own hands.

17 “Therefore prepare yourself and arise,

And speak to them all that I command you.

Do not be dismayed before their faces,

Lest I dismay you before them.

18 For behold, I have made you this day

A fortified city and an iron pillar,

And bronze walls against the whole land—

Against the kings of Judah,

Against its princes,

Against its priests,

And against the people of the land.

19 They will fight against you,

But they shall not prevail against you.

For I am with you,” says the LORD, “to deliver you.”

④ almond; first fruit after winter

Numbers 17:23

Numbers 17:8   The context is chapters 16 and 17 of Numbers/Bemidbar

8(23H) Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses went into the tabernacle of witness, and behold, the rod of Aaron, of the house of Levi, had sprouted and put forth buds, had produced blossoms and yielded ripe almonds (h8247. שָׁקֵד šâqêḏ).

⑤ almond-shaped

Exodus 25:33-36  the menorah – at some point, a discussion on the menorah

33 Three bowls (shall be) made like almond (h8246. שָׁקַד šâqaḏ) (blossoms) on one branch, with an ornamental knob and a flower, and three bowls made like almond (h8246. שָׁקַדšâqaḏ) (blossoms) on the other branch, (with) an (ornamental) knob and a flower—and so for the six branches that come out of the lampstand. 34 On the lampstand itself four bowls shall be made like almond (h8246. שָׁקַד šâqaḏ) (blossoms), (each with its ornamental) knob and flower. 35 And there shall be a knob under the first two branches of the same, a knob under the second two branches of the same, and a knob under the third two branches of the same, according to the six branches that extend from the lampstand. 36 Their knobs and their branches (shall be of one piece); all of it (shall be) one hammered (h4749. מִקְשָׁה miqšâ) piece of pure gold.

Exodus 25:39

39 It shall be made of a talent of pure gold, with all these utensils.

Exodus 25:39

39 כִּכָּ֛ר זָהָ֥ב טָהֹ֖ור יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה אֹתָ֑הּ אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַכֵּלִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

(Recall later, when we discuss the menorah, the almond, the light, focusing attention, the talent, pure, gold, and hammered work – critical understanding – too much for now. Each word so important. Very rich understanding of life in the menorah when attention is focused)

① resting undisturbed

Psalms 94:12-14

12 Blessed is the man whom You instruct, O LORD,

And teach out of Your law,

13 That You may give him rest (h8252. שָׁקַט šâqaṭ) from the days of adversity,

Until the pit is dug for the wicked.

14 For the LORD will not cast off His people,

Nor will He forsake His inheritance.

Deuteronomy 27:9

9 Then Moses and the priests, the Levites, spoke to all Israel, saying, “Take heed (h5535. סָכַת sâḵaṯ) and listen, O Israel: This day you have become the people of the LORD your God.

② calming

Psalms 76:7-9

7 You, Yourself, are to be feared;

And who may stand in Your presence

When once You are angry?

8 You caused judgment to be heard from heaven;

The earth feared and was still (h8252. שָׁקַט šâqaṭ),

9 When God arose to judgment,

To deliver all the oppressed of the earth.

Selah

Deuteronomy 27:9

Deuteronomy 27:9-10

9 Then Moses and the priests, the Levites, spoke to all Israel, saying, “Take heed (h5535. סָכַת sâḵaṯ) and listen (h8085. שָׁמַע šâma‘), O Israel: This day you have become the people of the LORD your God. 10 Therefore you shall obey the voice of the LORD your God, and observe His commandments and His statutes which I command you today.”

① pressing heavily

Lamentations 1:14     HAPAX

14 “The yoke of my transgressions was bound (h8244. שָׂקַד śâqaḏ);

They were woven together by His hands,

And thrust upon my neck.

He made my strength fail;

The Lord delivered me into the hands of those whom I am not able to withstand.
