65 1/2 Nimrod

65. Concentrate Attention

I do have two more entries on the Attention series ready to go, which will come out soon,LORD (יהוה) willing, but I am feeling a strong “nudge” to post this now. It is fairly short relative to recent entries. May our eyes, our ears, and our hearts be open.

Genesis 10:8-12

Genesis 10:10

10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

[[Genesis 10:8-12

8 Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one (h1368. גִּבּוֹר g̱ibbôr) on the earth. 9 He was a mighty (h1368. גִּבּוֹר g̱ibbôr) hunter (h6718. צַיִד ṣaiyḏ) before the LORD; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod the mighty (h1368. גִּבּוֹר g̱ibbôr) hunter (h6718. צַיִד ṣaiyḏ) before the LORD.” 10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 11 From that land he went to Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah, 12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah (that is the principal city).

Genesis 10:9

Consider נמרד as נמ + רד and/or נמר + רד

There is no נחם or נמה. Could be נום or נמר

Jeremiah 13:20-23

20 Lift up your eyes and see

Those who come from the north.

Where is the flock (that) was given to you,

Your beautiful sheep?

21 What will you say when He punishes you?

For you have taught them

(To be) chieftains, to be head over you.

Will not pangs seize you,

Like a woman in labor?

22 And if you say in your heart,

“Why have these things come upon me?”

For the greatness of your iniquity

Your skirts have been uncovered,

Your heels made bare.

23 Can the Ethiopian (h3569. כּוּשִׁי kûšiy) change his skin or the leopard (h5246. נָמֵר nâmêr) its spots (h2272. חֲבַרְבֻּרָה ḥăḇarḇurâ)?

(Then) may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil.

•h5246. נָמֵר nâmêr; from an unused root meaning properly, to filtrate, i.e. be limpid (comp 5247 and 5249); and thus to spot or stain as if by dripping; a leopard (from its stripes): — leopard.

AV (6) – leopard 6;

•h5247. נִמְרָה nimrâ; from the same as 5246; clear water; Nimrah, a place East of the Jordan

•h5249. נִמְרִים nimrîym; plural of a masculine corresponding to 5247; clear waters; Nimrim, a place East of the Jordan

① submitting

Psalms 144:1-2 – (A Song to the LORD Who Preserves and Prospers His People)

A Psalm of David.

1 Blessed be the LORD my Rock,

Who trains my hands for war,

And my fingers for battle—

2 My lovingkindness and my fortress,

My high tower and my deliverer,

My shield and the One in whom I take refuge,

Who subdues (h7286. רָדַד râḏaḏ) my people under me.

||

Hosea 13:1-2

1 When Ephraim spoke, trembling (h7578. רְתֵת reṯêṯ),

He exalted (himself) in Israel;

But when he offended through Baal (worship), he died.

2 Now they sin more and more,

And have made for themselves molded images,

Idols of their silver, according to their skill;

All of it is the work of craftsmen.

They say of them,

“Let the men who sacrifice kiss the calves!”

② flattening metal

1 Kings 6:32

32 The two doors were of olive wood; and he carved on them figures of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold; and he spread (h7286. רָדַד râḏaḏ) gold on the cherubim and on the palm trees.

③ thin veil

Isaiah 3:18-23

18 In that day the Lord will take away the finery:

The jingling anklets, the scarves, and the crescents;

19 The pendants, the bracelets, and the veils;

20 The headdresses, the leg ornaments, and the headbands;

The perfume boxes, the charms,

21 and the rings;

The nose jewels,

22 the festal apparel, and the mantles;

The outer garments, the purses,

23 and the mirrors;

The fine linen, the turbans, and the robes (h7289. רָדִיד râḏîyḏ).

OR

① sleeping

Proverbs 23:20-21

20 Do not mix with winebibbers,

Or with gluttonous eaters of meat;

21 For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty,

And drowsiness (h5124. נוּמָה nûmâ) will clothe (a man) with rags.

② slumbering

Psalms 121:1-4

A Song of Ascents.

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills—

From whence comes my help?

2 My help comes from the LORD,

Who made heaven and earth.

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved;

He who keeps you will not slumber (h5123. נוּם nûm).

4 Behold, He who keeps Israel

Shall neither slumber (h5123. נוּם nûm) nor sleep.

Personally I would favor נמר + רד for at least three reasons:  first, the chosen verse refers to Cush, since Nimrod is a son of Cush. Second, he seems to have been a very industrious, successful person, by his accomplishments and by the word mighty גבר (see גבר entry p.35 EDBH). Think of David’s “mighty men.” And finally it says twice he was “before the LORD,” where before is לפני, suggesting “in the presence of” the LORD.

But showing possibilities.

The verses listed for רדד seem almost specifically targeted at Nimrod, especially putting together with נמר. Paralleling Nimrod with Ephraim. Very successful in the presence of the LORD (יהוה) when subdued, humble, trembling (in the fear of the LORD), but when it got to the point of exalting oneself (as in Babel), the LORD (יהוה) of necessity must bring us down a few notches.

Exodus 20:25-26

25 And if you make Me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stone; for if you use your tool on it, you have profaned it. 26 Nor shall you go up by steps to My altar, that your nakedness may not be exposed on it.’

Recall we have spoken of our nakedness as our cleverness.

 מ- + ערה ↔︎ ערם ↔︎ ערה that which emanates from an object or person

Notice the ער as from the variant family below, which is in Shinar. The ש establishes the facts (in this case) as they are. [Also, see Shinar in Lot’s life in Genesis 14 and the pericope of the sin of Achan in Joshua 7:10-26.

• עָר-Ar.

• עָר-enemy.

• עָר-enemy.

• עֵר-Er.

GV p.193 ערר isolate; p.192 ערה bare [make sensitive; absorb impressions]; p.182 עורawaken [absorb external impulse]; p.107 יער collect [liquids; drench]; p.159 נער shake off [discard]    No DVs

CM ערר isolate (A54); ערה absorb/expel (A51); עור expose/conceal (A8); יער extend/contain (C16); נער discharge smoothly/violently (D61)

We do like to go for “the nice things.” The things that are to be dedicated to the LORD (יהוה). Wake up, America.
