I take one brief moment to remember our teacher, our mentor, our friend Oswald, who crossed over this week to the other side. Oswald has not only been the inspiration for the work done here, but an ongoing encouragement right up until he moved to join the LORD and his great friend Nathan. His wife Sonia remains our “mother” and our inspiration.

① penetrating

2 Chronicles 34:10

10 Then they put it in the hand of the foremen who had the oversight of the house of the LORD; and they gave it to the workmen who worked in the house of the LORD, to repair(h0918. בָּדַק ḇâḏaq) and restore the house.

Deuteronomy 13:12-15   Most likely the “sense” of the verse

12 “If you hear someone in one of your cities, which the LORD your God gives you to dwell in, saying, 13 ‘Corrupt men have gone out from among you and enticed the inhabitants of their city, saying, “Let us go and serve other gods”‘—which you have not known— 14(15H) then you shall inquire, search out, and ask diligently. And if it is indeed true and certain that such an abomination was committed among you, 15 you shall surely strike the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying it, all that is in it and its livestock—with the edge of the sword.

Deuteronomy 13:15   But note, if you take letters from each highlighted word?

Ezekiel 27:9

9 The elders of Gebal and her wise ones

All the ships of the sea

and their seamen were with you,

to exchange your merchandise.

① being between two distinct entities

Genesis 26:26-29

26 Then Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath, one of his friends, and Phichol the commander of his army. 27 And Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?”

28 But they said, “We have certainly seen that the LORD is with you. So we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between (h0996. בֵּין ḇêyn) us, between (h0996. בֵּין ḇêyn) you and us; and let us make a covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, since we have not touched you, and since we have done nothing to you but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the LORD.'”

② champion in the midst of a battlefiel

1 Samuel 17:4

4 And a champion (h0376. אִישׁ ’îyš + h1143. בֵּנַיִם ḇênaiym) went out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

Ezekiel 16:35-43 – (Jerusalem’s Lovers Will Abuse Her)

35 ‘Now then, O harlot, hear the word of the LORD! 36 Thus says the Lord GOD: “Because your filthiness was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your harlotry with your lovers, and with all your abominable idols, and because of the blood of your children which you gave to them, 37 surely, therefore, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved, and all those you hated; I will gather them from all around against you and will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness. 38 And I will judge you as women who break wedlock or shed blood are judged; I will bring blood upon you in fury and jealousy. 39 I will also give you into their hand, and they shall throw down your shrines and break down your high places. They shall also strip you of your clothes, take your beautiful jewelry, and leave you naked and bare.

40 “They shall also bring up an assembly against you, and they shall stone you with stones and thrust you through (h1333. בָּתַק ḇâṯaq) with their swords. 41 They shall burn your houses with fire, and execute judgments on you in the sight of many women; and I will make you cease playing the harlot, and you shall no longer hire lovers. 42 So I will lay to rest My fury toward you, and My jealousy shall depart from you. I will be quiet, and be angry no more. 43 Because you did not remember the days of your youth, but agitated Me with all these (things), surely I will also recompense your deeds on (your own) head,” says the Lord GOD. “And you shall not commit lewdness in addition to all your abominations.

CM פנן grasp (B33); פנה join elements (B32); פון direct attention (B19); אפן form (A6)

I have purposely focused your attention here on this Derivational Variant and its cognates. These are very important words. אבן we see frequently as “stone.” Note also that אבן and הבן are DVs of בנן understand; בנה build. But not only those are important. See the others as well, especially עון and און. Review some discussion of עון from before, as not only p.181 time to advantage, but also benefit for specific time periods, and how one usage of this word is “iniquity.” Sometimes things that are done at certain times of our lives or in certain “generations” are beneficial at that time but a hindrance at another time or a hindrance for our children. (See esp. Ex34:6-7). It is from such circumstances that we learn and that those coming after us learn. It is a description of evolution in a way. Is this behavior adaptive, or is it not? Is it not beneficial for us to direct our attention on our assumptions? Is our assumptive reasoning helpful?

① edict; decree

Esther 1:16-20

16 And Memucan answered before the king and the princes: “Queen Vashti has not only wronged the king, but also all the princes, and all the people who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus. 17 For the queen’s behavior will become known to all women, so that they will despise their husbands in their eyes, when they report, ‘King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought in before him, but she did not come.’ 18 This very day the noble ladies of Persia and Media will say to all the king’s officials that they have heard of the behavior of the queen. Thus there will be excessive contempt and wrath. 19 If it pleases the king, let a royal decree go out from him, and let it be recorded in the laws of the Persians and the Medes, so that it will not be altered, that Vashti shall come no more before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she. 20 When the king’s decree (h6599. פִּתְגָּם p̱iṯg̱âm) which he will make is proclaimed throughout all his empire (for it is great), all wives will honor their husbands, both great and small.”

① caring for

Psalms 139:1-3

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

1 O LORD, You have searched me and known me.

2 You know my sitting down and my rising up;

You understand my thought afar off.

3 You comprehend my path and my lying down,

And are acquainted (h5532. סָכַן sâḵan) with all my ways.

Genesis 24:1-4

1 Now Abraham was old, well advanced in age; and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. 2 So Abraham said to the oldest (h2205. זָקֵן zâqên) servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had, “Please, put your hand under my thigh, 3 and I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell; 4 but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”

② storing

Exodus 1:11

11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh supply (h4543. מִסְכְּנָה misḵenâ) cities, Pithom and Raamses.

③ being parsimonious

Deuteronomy 8:6-10

6 “Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him. 7 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, that flow out of valleys and hills; 8 a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey; 9 a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity (h4544. מִסְכֵּנֻת misḵênuṯ), in which you will lack nothing; a land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills you can dig copper. 10 When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you.

20 Whoever is too impoverished (h5533. סָכַן sâḵan) for such a contribution

Chooses a tree that will not rot;

He seeks for himself a skillful workman

To prepare a carved image that will not totter.

④ benefitting

Job 35:1-3

1 Moreover Elihu answered and said:

2 “Do you think this is right?

Do you say,

‘My righteousness is more than God’s’?

3 For you say,

‘What advantage (h5532. סָכַן sâḵan) will it be to You?

What profit shall I have, more than if I had sinned?’

Genesis 19:4-5

4 Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old (h2205. זָקֵןzâqên) and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. 5 And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them (carnally).”

⑤ paying close attention

Numbers 22:27-33

27 And when the donkey saw the Angel of the LORD, she lay down under Balaam; so Balaam’s anger was aroused, and he struck the donkey with his staff.

28 Then the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”

29 And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have abused me. I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would kill you!”

30 So the donkey said to Balaam, “(Am) I not your donkey on which you have ridden, ever since I (became yours), to this day? Was I ever disposed (h5532. סָכַן sâḵan) to do this to you?”

And he said, “No.”

31 Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the Angel of the LORD standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand; and he bowed his head and fell flat on his face. 32 And the Angel of the LORD said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to stand against you, because your way is perverse before Me. 33 The donkey saw Me and turned aside from Me these three times. If she had not turned aside from Me, surely I would also have killed you by now, and let her live.”

⑥ endangering

Ecclesiastes 10:8-10

8 He who digs a pit will fall into it,

And whoever breaks through a wall will be bitten by a serpent.

9 He who quarries stones may be hurt by them,

And he who splits wood may be endangered (h5533. סָכַן sâḵan) by it.

10 If the ax is dull,

And one does not sharpen the edge,

Then he must use more strength;

But wisdom brings success.

Exodus 7:11

Exodus 22:16-17

16 “If a man entices a virgin (h1330. בְּתוּלָה ḇeṯûlâ) who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he shall surely pay the bride-price for her to be his wife. 17 If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money (h3701. כֶּסֶף ḵesep̱) according to the bride-price (h4119. מֹהַר môhar) of virgins.   (Strongs h3701. כֶּסֶף ḵesep̱ = silver; yearn seems very appropriate)

Exodus 22:16

p.136 מהר hasten to act, usually to cement a relationship

CM מהר move in directed manner (B61)

The same old “pay me now or pay me later concept,” but understand, mankind has set the physical demands here, as elsewhere, trying to enforce our rules. What Scripture says is that the same yearning that the young man has for the young woman while working toward a goal of making her legitimately a wife will be repaid in the yearning for her if he is refused by the father. That is his just compensation/recompense. Yet these longings remain.

② being alert

Psalms 130:1-2

A Song of Ascents.

1 Out of the depths I have cried to You, O LORD;

2 Lord, hear my voice!

Psalms 140:1-3

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

1 Deliver me, O LORD, from evil men;

Preserve me from violent men,

2 Who plan evil things in their hearts;

They continually gather together for war.

3 They sharpen their tongues like a serpent;

The poison of asps (h5919. עַכְשׁוּב ‘aḵšûḇ) is under their lips.

Joshua 6:25

25 And Joshua spared Rahab the harlot (h2181. זָנָה zânâ), her father’s household, and all that she had. So she dwells in Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

① being speckled

Genesis 30:31-33

31 So he said, “What shall I give you?”

And Jacob said, “You shall not give me anything. If you will do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep your flocks: 32 Let me pass through all your flock today, removing from there all the speckled and spotted (h2921. טָלָא ṭâlâ’) sheep, and all the brown ones among the lambs, and the spotted (h2921. טָלָא ṭâlâ’) and speckled among the goats; and these shall be my wages. 33 So my righteousness will answer for me in time to come, when the subject of my wages comes before you: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the lambs, will be considered stolen, if it is with me.”

This is the great deception that Jacob carried out against Laban. Feelings may differ on whether one might think he was justified or not. He was certainly cunning. )

② alternate colors

Joshua 9:3-6

3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon גבעון heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, 4 they worked craftily, and went and pretended to be ambassadors. And they took old sacks on their donkeys, old wineskins torn and mended, 5 old and patched (h2921. טָלָא ṭâlâ’) sandals on their feet, and old garments on themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry and moldy. 6 And they went to Joshua, to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country; now therefore, make a covenant with us.”

Recall the Gibeonites were the ones who deceived Joshua and his men, making a covenant with them. The key verse is Joshua 9:14

14 Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the LORD.

גבעון is a good one to divide and look up גב + עון

The surest way to be attentive is to recognize the need always to ask counsel of the LORD (יהוה). Pause before responding.

③ young speckled lamb needing attention

Isaiah 40:10-11

10 Behold, the Lord GOD shall come with a strong hand,

And His arm shall rule for Him;

Behold, His reward is with Him,

And His work before Him.

11 He will feed His flock like a shepherd;

He will gather the lambs (h2922. טְלָא ṭelâ’) with His arm,

And carry them in His bosom,

And gently lead those who are with young.

① listening

Genesis 49:1-2

1 And Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days:

Leviticus 26:14-16

14 ‘But if you do not obey (h8085. שָׁמַע šâma‘) Me, and do not observe all these commandments,

16 I also will do this to you:

I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease and fever which shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of heart.

And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.

Deuteronomy 4:1-3

1 “Now, O Israel, listen (h8085. שָׁמַע šâma‘) to the statutes and the judgments which I teach you to observe, that you may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers is giving you. 2 You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. 3 Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal Peor; for the LORD your God has destroyed from among you all the men who followed Baal of Peor.

② obeying

Psalms 18:43-45

43 You have delivered me from the strivings of the people;

You have made me the head of the nations;

A people I have not known shall serve me.

44(45H) As soon as they hear of me they obey (h8085. שָׁמַע šâma‘) me;

③ deferring

Isaiah 11:12-14

12 He will set up a banner for the nations,

And gather together the dispersed of Judah

From the four corners of the earth.

13 Also the envy of Ephraim shall depart,

14 But they shall fly down upon the shoulder of the Philistines toward the west;

Together they shall plunder the people of the East;

They shall lay their hand on Edom and Moab;

And the people of Ammon shall obey (h4928. מִשְׁמַעַת mišma‘aṯ) them.

h4928. מִשְׁמַעַת mišma‘aṯ; feminineal sense of superiority in mental action; properly, a pithy maxim, usually of metaphorical nature; hence, a simile (as a adae, compare, use (as a) proverb, speak (in proverbs), utter.

AV (4) – guard 2, bidding 1, obey 1;

subjects, body of subjects, bodyguard, listeners, obedient ones

bodyguard

subjects

④ making voice heard

Psalms 26:6-8

6 I will wash my hands in innocence;

So I will go about Your altar, O LORD,

7 That I may proclaim (h8085. שָׁמַע šâma‘) with the voice of thanksgiving,

And tell of all Your wondrous works.

8 LORD, I have loved the habitation of Your house,

And the place where Your glory dwells.

Exodus 3:13

13 Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name (h8034. שֵׁם šêm)?’ what shall I say to them?”

⑤ hearing unintentionally

Deuteronomy 32:1-4

1 “Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak;

And hear (h8085. שָׁמַע šâma‘), O earth, the words of my mouth.

2 Let my teaching drop as the rain,

My speech distill as the dew,

As raindrops on the tender herb,

And as showers on the grass.

3 For I proclaim the name of the LORD:

Ascribe greatness to our God.

4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect;

For all His ways are justice,

A God of truth and without injustice;

Righteous and upright is He.

⑥ being famous

Joshua 6:27

27 So the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame spread (h8089. שֹׁמַע šôma‘) throughout all the country.

⑦ hear tidings

Obadiah 1:1-4

1 The vision of Obadiah.

Thus says the Lord GOD concerning Edom

(We have heard (h8085. שָׁמַע šâma‘) a report (h8052. שְׁמוּעָה šemû‘â) from the LORD,

And a messenger has been sent among the nations, saying,

“Arise, and let us rise up against her for battle”):

2 “Behold, I will make you small among the nations;

You shall be greatly despised.

3 The pride of your heart has deceived you,

You who dwell in the clefts of the rock,

Whose habitation is high;

You who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’

4 Though you ascend as high as the eagle,

And though you set your nest among the stars,

From there I will bring you down,” says the LORD.
