58. Break Bones

59. Act Eagerly
57. Let’s talk more about טוב

Exodus 12:43-49 – (Passover Regulations – Gen. 17:9–14; Ex. 12:1–13)

43 And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the ordinance of the Passover: No foreigner shall eat it. 44 But every man’s servant who is bought for money, when you have circumcised him, then he may eat it. 45 A sojourner and a hired servant shall not eat it. 46 In one house it shall be eaten; you shall not carry any of the flesh (h1320. בָּשָׂר ḇâśâr) outside the house, nor shall you break (h7665. שָׁבַר šâḇar) one of its bones (h6106. עֶצֶם ‘eṣem). 47 All the congregation of Israel shall keep (h6213. עָשָׂה ‘âśâ) it. 48 And when a stranger dwells with you and (wants tokeep (h6213. עָשָׂה ‘âśâ) the Passover (h6453. פֶּסַח p̱esaḥ) to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near (h7126. קָרַב qâraḇ) and keep (h6213. עָשָׂה ‘âśâ) it; and he shall be as a native (h0249. אֶזְרָח ’ezrâḥ) of the land. For no uncircumcised person shall eat it. 49 One law shall be for the native-born and for the stranger who dwells among you.”

Numbers 9:12-13

12 They shall leave none of it until morning, nor break one of its bones. According to all the ordinances of the Passover they shall keep it. 13 But the man who is clean and is not on a journey, and ceases to keep the Passover, that same person shall be cut off from among his people, because he did not bring the offering of the LORD at its appointed time; that man shall bear his sin.

There are other occurrences of “break bones” in NKJV, with different verbs:

in Nm24:8 – p.48 גרם lever motion;; CM גרם stagger access (C42)

in Mi3:3 – p.204 פצח open up;; CM פצח reveal (B21) – a cognate of פסח Pesach/Passover

Also there are occurrences of “broken bones,”

Psalms 34:20  ((which is quoted of Yeshua/Jesus in John19:36))

20 He guards all his bones (h6106. עֶצֶם ‘eṣem);

Not one of them is broken (h7665. שָׁבַר šâḇar).

Lamentations 3:1-4 – (The Prophet’s Anguish and Hope)

1 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of His wrath.

2 He has led me and made me walk

In darkness and not in light.

3 Surely He has turned His hand against me

Time and time again throughout the day.

4 He has aged my flesh and my skin,

And broken (h7665. שָׁבַר šâḇar) my bones (h6106. עֶצֶם ‘eṣem).

There are two that have broken and bones in the same verse that seem to connect bones with spirit (h7307. רוּחַ rûaḥ), Pr17:22, and heart (h3820. לֵב lêḇ) Jr23:9 also Pr17:22) suggesting a tie between our strength and our heart/spirit, which is not difficult to connect.

And finally:

Isaiah 38:9-20

9 This is the writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick and had recovered from his sickness:

10 I said,

“In the prime of my life

I shall go to the gates of Sheol;

I am deprived of the remainder of my years.”

11 I said,

“I shall not see YAH,

The LORD in the land of the living;

I shall observe man no more among the inhabitants of the world.

12 My life span is gone,

Taken from me like a shepherd’s tent;

I have cut off my life like a weaver.

He cuts me off from the loom;

From day until night You make an end of me.

13 I have considered until morning—

Like a lion,

So He breaks (h7665. שָׁבַר šâḇar) all my bones (h6106. עֶצֶם ‘eṣem);

From day until night You make an end of me.

14 Like a crane or a swallow, so I chattered;

I mourned like a dove;

My eyes fail from looking upward.

O LORD, I am oppressed;

Undertake for me!

15 “What shall I say?

He has both spoken to me,

And He Himself has done it.

I shall walk carefully all my years

In the bitterness of my soul.

16 O Lord, by these things men live;

And in all these things is the life of my spirit;

So You will restore me and make me live.

17 Indeed it was for my own peace

That I had great bitterness;

But You have lovingly delivered my soul from the pit of corruption,

For You have cast all my sins behind Your back.

18 For Sheol cannot thank You,

Death cannot praise You;

Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your truth.

19 The living, the living man, he shall praise You,

As I do this day;

The father shall make known Your truth to the children.

20 “The LORD was ready to save me;

Therefore we will sing my songs with stringed instruments

All the days of our life, in the house of the LORD.”

These words below are from the first occurrence: Exodus 12:43-49

Bone עצם

① strengthening

Numbers 22:6

6 Therefore please come at once, curse this people for me, for they are too mighty (h6099. עָצוּם ‘âṣûm) for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”

||

Exodus 1:7

7 But the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, multiplied and grew exceedingly mighty (h6105. עָצַם ‘âṣam); and the land was filled with them.

||

Deuteronomy 8:11-17

11 “Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today, 12 lest—when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them; 13 and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; 14 when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; 15 who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, in which were fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty land where there was no water; who brought water for you out of the flinty rock; 16 who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do you good in the end— 17 then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might (h6108. עֹצֶם ‘ôṣem) of my hand have gained me this wealth.’

② increasing numerically

Numbers 32:1

1 Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great (h6099. עָצוּם ‘âṣûm) multitude (h7227. רַב raḇ) of livestock; and when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that indeed the region was a place for livestock,

((Note for future investigation h6099 + h7227 – 15 occurrences))

③ shutting; closing

Isaiah 33:15-16

15 He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly,

He who despises the gain of oppressions,

Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes,

Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed,

And shuts (h6105. עָצַם ‘âṣam) his eyes from seeing evil:

16 He will dwell on high;

His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks;

Bread will be given him,

His water will be sure.

④ vigor

Isaiah 40:29

29 He gives power (h3581. כֹּחַ ḵôaḥ) to the weak,

Psalms 6:2(3H)

2 Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am weak;

⑥ essence

Psalms 139:14-15

14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

Marvelous are Your works,

And that my soul knows very well.

15 My frame (h6108. עֹצֶם ‘ôṣem) was not hidden from You,

When I was made in secret,

And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

⑦ law suit evidence

Isaiah 41:21-22 – (The Futility of Idols)

21 “Present your case,” says the LORD.

“Bring forth your strong (h6110. עַצֻּמָה ‘aṣumâ) (reasons),” says the King of Jacob.

22 “Let them bring forth and show us what will happen;

Let them show the former things, what they were,

That we may consider them,

And know the latter end of them;

Or declare to us things to come.

The God of Israel (is) He who gives strength and power (h8592. תַּעֲצֻמָה ṯa‘ăṣumâ) to (His) people.

Blessed (be) God!

Break שבר

① breaking; splitting up

Exodus 23:23-24

23 For My Angel will go before you and bring you in to the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Canaanites and the Hivites and the Jebusites; and I will cut them off. 24 You shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do according to their works; but you shall utterly overthrow them and completely break down (h7665. שָׁבַר šâḇar) their (sacred) pillars.

Genesis 5:1

1 This is the book (h5612. סֵפֶר sêp̱er) of the genealogy of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.

This is a huge, huge, huge discussion, for which I am not yet adequately prepared. There are tons of connections. I can give you one here and now for you to begin to ponder (“just in time training”), but know there is much more, in the context of Gn5:1 and Gn2:21-23, and beyond (“To infinity and beyond!”). See below

② selling small quantities

Genesis 41:53-57

53 Then the seven years of plenty which were in the land of Egypt ended, 54 and the seven years of famine began to come, as Joseph had said. The famine was in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. 55 So when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Then Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph; whatever he says to you, do.” 56 The famine was over all the face of the earth, and Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold (h7666. שָׁבַר šâḇar) to the Egyptians. And the famine became severe in the land of Egypt. 57 So all countries came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all lands.

Genesis 41:56

④ interpreting

Judges 7:13-15

13 And when Gideon had come, there was a man telling a dream to his companion. He said, “I have had a dream: To my surprise, a loaf of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent and struck it so that it fell and overturned, and the tent collapsed.”

14 Then his companion answered and said, “This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel! Into his hand God has delivered Midian and the whole camp.”

15 And so it was, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation (h7667. שֶׁבֶר šeḇer), that he worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel, and said, “Arise, for the LORD has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand.”

⑤ bringing to birth

Isaiah 66:7-11

7 “Before she was in labor, she gave birth;

Before her pain came,

She delivered a male child.

8 Who has heard such a thing?

Who has seen such things?

Shall the earth be made to give birth in one day?

Or shall a nation be born at once?

For as soon as Zion was in labor,

She gave birth to her children.

9 Shall I bring to the time of birth (h7665. שָׁבַר šâḇar), and not cause delivery?” says the LORD.

“Shall I who cause delivery shut up the womb?” says your God.

10 “Rejoice with Jerusalem,

And be glad with her, all you who love her;

Rejoice for joy with her, all you who mourn for her;

11 That you may feed and be satisfied

With the consolation of her bosom (h7699. שַׁד šaḏ),

That you may drink deeply and be delighted

With the abundance of her glory.”

⑥ crashing waves

Psalms 42:5-8

5 Why are you cast down, O my soul?

And why are you disquieted within me?

Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him

For the help of His countenance.

6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me;

Therefore I will remember You from the land of the Jordan,

And from the heights of Hermon,

From the Hill Mizar.

7 Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls;

All Your waves (h4867. מִשְׁבָּר mišḇâr) and billows have gone over me.

8 The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime,

And in the night His song shall be with me—

A prayer to the God of my life.

h4867. מִשְׁבָּר mišḇâr; from h7665. שָׁבַר šâḇar; a breaker (of the sea): — billow, wave.

⑦ quarries; pits

Joshua 7:1-5

1 But the children of Israel committed a trespass regarding the accursed things, for Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the LORD burned against the children of Israel. 2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, “Go up and spy out the country.” So the men went up and spied out Ai. 3 And they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not weary all the people there, for (the people of Ai are) few.” 4 So about three thousand men went up there from the people, but they fled before the men of Ai. 5 And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six men, for they chased them (from) before the gate as far as Shebarim (h7671. שְׁבָרִיםšeḇârîym), and struck them down on the descent; therefore the hearts of the people melted and became like water.

h7671. שְׁבָרִים šeḇârîym; plural of h7667. שֶׁבֶר šeḇer; ruins; Shebarim

h7667. שֶׁבֶר šeḇer; or שֵׁבֶר sheber; from h7665. שָׁבַר šâḇar; a fracture, figuratively, ruin; specifically, a solution (of a dream): — affliction, breach, breaking, broken(-footed, -handed), bruise, crashing, destruction, hurt, interpretation, vexation.

⑧ crisis; great hardship

Isaiah 37:3-4

3 And they said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah: ‘This day is a day of trouble and rebuke and blasphemy; for the children have come to birth (h4866. מִשְׁבֵּר mišḇêr), but there is no strength to bring them forth. 4 It may be that the LORD your God will hear the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to reproach the living God, and will rebuke the words which the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’ ”

h4866. מִשְׁבֵּר mišḇêr; from h7665. שָׁבַר šâḇar; the orifice of the womb (from which the fetus breaks forth): — birth, breaking forth.

A very few connections referred to above. There are SO many more:

➨ Genesis 1:26-28

26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

AND

Genesis 2:21-23

21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

23 And Adam said:

“This is now bone of my bones

And flesh of my flesh;

She shall be called Woman,

Because she was taken out of Man.”

((Note the mention of bones. And for now we can’t even go into the same/similar letters in different order with “break שבר” and “flesh בשׂר.”))

A few tidbits to help you consider:

  1. How we got to ספר in Gn5:1 from שבר is that they are phonetic cognates
  2. The cognate meaning of שבר and ספר (there are 12 total cognates in E14, of which these are two, but very important words for understanding Scripture) is CM unify/separate (E14)
  3. Many people ask why there are three “creation of mankind” descriptions, one in Gn1, one in Gn2, and one in Gn5. I am sure that one of the Sages could show you where I am wrong. My impression (caution! This is one witness – please confirm this yourself!) is that chapters two-five are the first examples of “progressive revelation” in Scripture, pausing to explain in more detail some of what was said in chapter one.
  4. Where verse 5:1 says, “This (h2088. זֶה zeh) is the book (h5612. סֵפֶר sêp̱er) of the genealogy (h8435. תּוֹלְדָה tôleḏâ) of Adam,” h8435. תּוֹלְדָה tôleḏâ is from the root ילד. You interpret for yourself after checking this out, but it seems one possible way to look at the beginning of this sentence is in trying to help us understand what is written in chapters one and two of Genesis. Recall God is one, but mankind is made in the image of God, and God apparently has built-in contrasts which can then be seen as separated in two aspects of mankind. Think of mankind as being “the child.” Perhaps something along the lines of the unity/separation of bringing forth man.

5. One more thought to throw out there, and again, always 🤔 for yourself. Could the word h2088. זֶה zeh here, the first word of Gn5:1, be from the root:

Strongs lists הזה as occurring only once. Mikraot Gedolot shows הזה occurs 663 times. Most often it is interpreted as זה, “this.” Here is

Isaiah 56:10

10 His watchmen are blind,

They are all ignorant;

They are all dumb dogs,

They cannot bark;

Sleeping (h1957. הָזָה hâzâ), lying down, loving to slumber.

[[NKJV footnote says “or Dreaming”]]

Could some instances of זה be short for הזה? Again, not my place to say, but since the woman is described as the “help meet,” ezer kenegdo, the helper who “opposes” or challenges (p.147 נגד isolate; oppose), one wonders if God envisioned the need for the contrast between the two aspects within the Oneness to bring out the best in both. Would only one aspect in mankind just bring about a slumbering daydreamer, simply tending the garden and livestock? We do, indeed, perform best when challenged.

And הזה is likely part of a family•••

CM זהה continue/curtail (E8); זוה control movement/action (E5); זאה continue/abort energetic movement (E2); נזה move in opposition (D81); אזה and הזה limit/expand activity (A24); זיו move up/down (E16) – NOTE E2 and E8 should be combined

Both are listed as qal in BDB, which, if one goes strictly by BDB, should be “buy or purchase,” not sell, because “sell” is the hiphil, causative form (to cause to be bought, to cause to buy). I am not a Hebrew Scholar, so cannot debate or challenge, but could there be a sense of “buying” in both – see the lamed prefix derivation below – wasn’t Joseph literally “buying the Egyptians,” slowly, incrementally?

ל ⇦ from לוה or אלה

GV p.128 להה weaken [incrementally]; p.129 לוה connect [join for mutual benefit]

DV p.128 להה weaken [incrementally] > p.127 לאה give up; tire

¿ DV הלה – p.128 להה weaken [incrementally] > p.59 הלה fault ?

¿ DV אלה – p.128 להה weaken [incrementally]; p.129 לוה connect [join for mutual benefit] > p.10 אלה master; combine elements for control

CM לוה ignite emotion/interest (D46); להה move slowly/quickly (D51); לאה retain/lose power (D42); אלה and הלה develop/decline (A33)

There is a freestanding two-letter preposition meaning “to,” אל, which EDBH says comes from אלה (and of course אלה fits both variant families)

Could this be yet another clear example of cycles? Joseph gradually makes the Egyptians slaves. Read Genesis 47:18-25. In this is much to learn. A later Pharaoh (h6547. פַּרְעֹהp̱ar‘ô) learned (if not already knew) about enslaving people, and the Israelites were enslaved. They are repeatedly reminded that they were slaves once. Remembering our own former circumstances should give us a more compassionate heart. A doctor who has become a patient her/himself is a kinder, gentler doctor. As noted in Blog #55, Answers, continued, we should be able to learn from the cycles, both sides of the cycle, and respond accordingly.

We can talk later about Adam’s excitement in seeing Eve, “Indeed, bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh,” contrasted with his blaming her and God later,

Genesis 3:12

12 Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

We have a love/hate relationship with our challengers, do we not? Perhaps mostly we have a love/love relationship with I, me, my.

I have a confession to make that relates to the topic here, but it requires a short side trip. After my confession, perhaps half of you will stop reading. But it is a place where I have been led, and it is time. Hopefully you will see connections to today’s topic.

So, for the side trip, there are a few steps. We will start with this verse, which is a precursor to the great flood:

Genesis 6:5

5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent (h3336. יֵצֶר êyṣer) of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Step one is to say that there is much said in Tanakh about our “intent,” such as here.

Step two, recall Hirsch says often roots with Yod in the פ position are identical in meaning with roots with Vav in the ע position. And recall he uses טוב and טוב  as examples (p.295). Here we have יצר and צור:

GV p.222 צרר compress [combine]; p.222 צרה squeeze; p.215 צור compress [press from all sides]; p.108 יצר [compress] form; p.160 נצר protect [preserve; save]

DV צהר – p.222 צרר compress [combine]; p.222 צרה squeeze; p.215 צור compress [press from all sides] > p.213 צהר illuminate; create a circle of light

CM צרר apply/withhold pressure (E34); צרה project outward (E30); צור unify/separate (E14); יצר expand/limit (C22); נצר preserve/separate (D85); צהר limit/complete (E10)

I think this helps us understand a bit better some concepts. The word Mitzrayim, Egypt, is formed from this family. We have spoken of how Egypt represents “the world.” In your mind, tie together the idea of “peer pressure,” this pressure of “the world,” and the idea of “intent,” ideas that are “formed” within us, that are precursors to our actions. And think of how our actions are formed by our intentions.

And now think of a topic we have been discussing recently with the letter ב, beyt, meaning being “in the house of,” or “in the land of.” We see many times being בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם, “in the land of Egypt.”

In the idea of “progressive revelation,” Yeshua/Jesus helps to clarify what is repeated over and over in Tanakh, though perhaps in language we don’t understand quite as well in Tanakh. If you will read in the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5:17-48, you will see much talk about intent. The standard is not raised, just clarified. He describes living “in the land of,” or “in the house of” murder or adultery, as examples. We don’t have to actually murder someone to have broken their bones, killed their spirit. We may commit adultery in our heart by living in the house of lust.

So, the confession is that I have really broken all of the Ten Commandments in my life. Some literally, like adultery, and some spiritually, like living in the house of lust (a false god), living in the house of wishing someone else dead or treating them as if they were dead. I have lied and I have disrespected my parents. I have stolen, I have coveted. It probably all boils down to my doing “what was right in my own eyes,” my intent being evil, though so wrapped up in myself I didn’t recognize it. That is my confession.

So, when I share about “I, me, my,” know that I have lived it, and know that my bones have been broken (literally and figuratively). Know that I am so thankful for a God who is merciful and full of grace, longsuffering, and kind. AND a God who does not overlook our failures, but uses the circumstances of our lives to teach us a better way, God’s way. Only God knows the right measure of breaking of the spirit. Only God can really guide us in the Way, but also blessedly, only if we let God lead. The LORD (יהוה) does not force the Way upon us, but surely does give us “encouragement” and “chastising” in hopes that we learn.

I thank you, LORD, for all that you are. And I understand if you, the reader, don’t want to read here again.
