I began a project to take another look at “All Those Nations” we discussed in Post #43, the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites, Jebusites, by using some of the newer tools we have been working with recently. I began with the last on the list, the Jebusites. You will see that this is a study of the verses where the word יבוסי (Jebusite) occurs. You will also see that in many of the verses, the other nations appear, as well. If we do get to a study of the other nations, we will not duplicate the verses seen here where they all appear together. Today’s focus is on Jebusites and whether we get the same impressions we got in the All Those Nations Post.

Exodus 13:3-6 – (The Feast of Unleavened Bread)

3 And Moses said to the people: “Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out of this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten. 4 On this day you are going out, in the month Abib. 5 And it shall be, when the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, which He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall keep this service in this month. 6 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the LORD.

25 “So you shall serve the LORD your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness away from the midst of you. 26 No one shall suffer miscarriage or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days.

Exodus 33:1-6

1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Depart and go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘To your descendants I will give it.’ 2 And I will send My Angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanite and the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. 3 Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.” 4 And when the people heard this bad news, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments. 5 For the LORD had said to Moses, “Say to the children of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. I could come up into your midst in one moment and consume you. Now therefore, take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do to you.’ ” 6 So the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by Mount Horeb.

Exodus 34:10-17

10 And He said: “Behold, I make a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation; and all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the LORD. For it is an awesome thing that I will do with you. 11 Observe what I command you this day. Behold, I am driving out from before you the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. 12 Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be a snare in your midst. 13 But you shall destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and cut down their wooden images 14 (for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God), 15 lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they play the harlot with their gods and make sacrifice to their gods, and one of them invites you and you eat of his sacrifice, 16 and you take of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters play the harlot with their gods and make your sons play the harlot with their gods.

17 “You shall make no molded gods for yourselves.

וְהַכְּנַעֲנִי יוֹשֵׁב עַל הַיָּם וְעַל יַד הַיַּרְדֵּן.

Numbers 13:26-33

26 Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 Then they told him, and said: “We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan.”

30 Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.”

31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” 32 And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”

(( This is how Israel got forty more years in the wilderness under Moses. ))

10. Devarim 7:1 (Mikraot Gedolot)

כִּי יְבִיאֲךָ י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֶל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתָּה בָא שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ וְנָשַׁל גּוֹיִם רַבִּים מִפָּנֶיךָ 

הַחִתִּי וְהַגִּרְגָּשִׁיוְהָאֱמֹרִי וְהַכְּנַעֲנִי וְהַפְּרִזִּי וְהַחִוִּי וְהַיְבוּסִי שִׁבְעָה גוֹיִם רַבִּים וַעֲצוּמִים מִמֶּךָּ.

Deuteronomy 7:1-5

1 “When the LORD your God brings you into the land which you go to possess, and has cast out many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you, 2 and when the LORD your God delivers them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them. 3 Nor shall you make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to their son, nor take their daughter for your son. 4 For they will turn your sons away from following Me, to serve other gods; so the anger of the LORD will be aroused against you and destroy you suddenly. 5 But thus you shall deal with them: you shall destroy their altars, and break down their sacred pillars, and cut down their wooden images, and burn their carved images with fire.

(Very clear directive; left up to the tribes in their allotted areas.)

11. Devarim 20:17 (Mikraot Gedolot)

כִּי הַחֲרֵם תַּחֲרִימֵם הַחִתִּי וְהָאֱמֹרִי הַכְּנַעֲנִי וְהַפְּרִזִּי הַחִוִּי וְהַיְבוּסִי כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוְּךָ י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ.

Deuteronomy 20:16-18

16 “But of the cities of these peoples which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance, you shall let nothing that breathes remain alive, 17 but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite, just as the LORD your God has commanded you, 18 lest they teach you to do according to all their abominations which they have done for their gods, and you sin against the LORD your God.

(You will notice later that Judah and Benjamin did not accomplish this directive re: the Jebusites)

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בְּזֹאת תֵּדְעוּן כִּי אֵל חַי בְּקִרְבְּכֶם וְהוֹרֵשׁ יוֹרִישׁ מִפְּנֵיכֶם אֶת הַכְּנַעֲנִי 

וְאֶת הַחִתִּי וְאֶת הַחִוִּיוְאֶת הַפְּרִזִּי וְאֶת הַגִּרְגָּשִׁי וְהָאֱמֹרִי וְהַיְבוּסִי.

Joshua 3:9-11

9 So Joshua said to the children of Israel, “Come here, and hear the words of the LORD your God.” 10 And Joshua said, “By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and that He will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Hivites and the Perizzites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Jebusites: 11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is crossing over before you into the Jordan.

Joshua 9:1-2

1 And it came to pass when all the kings who were on this side of the Jordan, in the hills and in the lowland and in all the coasts of the Great Sea toward Lebanon—the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite—heard about it, 2 that they gathered together to fight with Joshua and Israel with one accord.

1 And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor heard these things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph, 2 and to the kings who were from the north, in the mountains, in the plain south of Chinneroth, in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor on the west, 3 to the Canaanites in the east and in the west, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite in the mountains, and the Hivite below Hermon in the land of Mizpah. 4 So they went out, they and all their armies with them, as many people as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with very many horses and chariots. 5 And when all these kings had met together, they came and camped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel. 6 But the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow about this time I will deliver all of them slain before Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.”

7 And these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel conquered on this side of the Jordan, on the west, from Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon as far as Mount Halak and the ascent to Seir, which Joshua gave to the tribes of Israel as a possession according to their divisions, 8 in the mountain country, in the lowlands, in the Jordan plain, in the slopes, in the wilderness, and in the South—the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites:

16. Yehoshua 15:8 (Mikraot Gedolot)

וְעָלָה הַגְּבוּל גֵּי בֶן הִנֹּם אֶל כֶּתֶף הַיְבוּסִי מִנֶּגֶב הִיא יְרוּשָׁלָ͏ִם וְעָלָה הַגְּבוּל אֶל רֹאשׁ הָהָר אֲשֶׁר עַל פְּנֵי גֵיהִנֹּם יָמָּה אֲשֶׁר בִּקְצֵה עֵמֶק רְפָאִים צָפוֹנָה.

Joshua 15:8

8 And the border went up by the Valley of the Son of Hinnom to the southern slope of the Jebusite city (which is Jerusalem). The border went up to the top of the mountain that lies before the Valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the Valley of Rephaim northward.

63 As for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.

Joshua 18:16

16 Then the border came down to the end of the mountain that lies before the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, which is in the Valley of the Rephaim on the north, descended to the Valley of Hinnom, to the side of the Jebusite city on the south, and descended to En Rogel.

Joshua 18:21-28

21 Now the cities of the tribe of the children of Benjamin, according to their families, were Jericho, Beth Hoglah, Emek Keziz, 22 Beth Arabah, Zemaraim, Bethel, 23 Avim, Parah, Ophrah, 24 Chephar Haammoni, Ophni, and Gaba: twelve cities with their villages; 25 Gibeon, Ramah, Beeroth, 26 Mizpah, Chephirah, Mozah, 27 Rekem, Irpeel, Taralah, 28 Zelah, Eleph, Jebus (which is Jerusalem), Gibeath, and Kirjath: fourteen cities with their villages. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families.

וַתַּעַבְרוּ אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן וַתָּבֹאוּ אֶל יְרִיחוֹ וַיִּלָּחֲמוּ בָכֶם בַּעֲלֵי יְרִיחוֹ הָאֱמֹרִי וְהַפְּרִזִּי וְהַכְּנַעֲנִי וְהַחִתִּי וְהַגִּרְגָּשִׁיהַחִוִּי וְהַיְבוּסִי וָאֶתֵּן אוֹתָם בְּיֶדְכֶם.

Joshua 24:11-15 (begin reading at 24:1 – the LORD speaking through Joshua)

11 Then you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho. And the men of Jericho fought against you—also the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. But I delivered them into your hand. 12 I sent the hornet before you which drove them out from before you, also the two kings of the Amorites, but not with your sword or with your bow. 13 I have given you a land for which you did not labor, and cities which you did not build, and you dwell in them; you eat of the vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant.’

14 “Now therefore, fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD! 15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. וְאֶת הַיְבוּסִי יֹשֵׁב יְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִם לֹא הוֹרִישׁוּ בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן וַיֵּשֶׁב הַיְבוּסִי אֶת בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן בִּירוּשָׁלַ͏ִם עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה.

Judges 1:21

21 But the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; so the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

Judges 3:1-6 – (The Nations Remaining in the Land)

1 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, that He might test Israel by them, that is, all who had not known any of the wars (h4421. מִלְחָמָה milḥâmâ) in Canaan 2 (this was only so that the generations of the children of Israel might be taught to know war (h4421. מִלְחָמָהmilḥâmâ), at least those who had not formerly known it), 3 namely, five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath. 4 And they were left, that He might test Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commandments of the LORD, which He had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. 5 Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods.

Two important points here. The first is this point of “testing,” which we discussed in Post 43. All Those Nations. The second, and tied to the first is this idea in the word translated here as “war.” A few points about this “war” idea:

This may be the strongest recurring theme throughout Scripture which still applies to this day, and which we refuse to accept and live by to this day. An attempt at a brief explanation with some examples: we are strongly warned against complacency, yet that is where we continually return when life goes along with little challenge.

Exodus 13:17-18 – (The Wilderness Way)

17 Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war (h4421. מִלְחָמָה milḥâmâ), and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up in orderly ranks out of the land of Egypt.

Recall that Egypt is a type of “the world,” full of “desires.” Recall that the Israelites are constantly told to “remember, you were slaves once in Egypt.” Slaves of the desires of all of the “plenty” in Egypt. 

Another passage about turning to the desires (foreign gods) and complacency:

Deuteronomy 32:12-16

12 So the LORD alone led him,

And there was no foreign god with him.

13 “He made him ride in the heights of the earth,

That he might eat the produce of the fields;

He made him draw honey from the rock,

And oil from the flinty rock;

14 Curds from the cattle, and milk of the flock,

With fat of lambs;

And rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats,

With the choicest wheat;

And you drank wine, the blood of the grapes.

15 “But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked;

You grew fat, you grew thick,

You are obese!

Then he forsook God who made him,

And scornfully esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

16 They provoked Him to jealousy with foreign gods;

With abominations they provoked Him to anger.

There are many more, but let’s tie it back to war. Read Jeremiah 48:10-20. Read about “doing the work of the LORD (יהוה) with slackness,” and read about Moab which has been in a protected position for generations, “not being emptied from vessel to vessel, nor having gone into exile.” Moab has not been challenged, tested. Moab has “settled on his dregs” or “settled on his lees,” which means become complacent. The answer is that war (h4421. מִלְחָמָה milḥâmâ) will come. It is a predictable cycle, be it a war of swords or plagues, whatever form it takes, it is a test, a challenge to see if when we fall or are knocked down, whether we rise again, closer to the LORD (יהוה) or not.

So, this point cannot be missed in our current life situation. We must draw close to the LORD, or longer and/or deeper challenges must come. It is the nature of Creation. So, let’s look at this “war” word which is from a root we’ve studied before, and then I’ll try to wrap up this “thread” of the tapestry.

h4421. מִלְחָמָה milḥâmâ; from h3898. לָחַם lâḥam

First note that familiar words like bread and the House of Bread (Bethlehem) come from this root. How is it that bread and Bethlehem are connected to “war?” I’ll give you the root and its introduction into Scripture and leave drawing the connection to you.


Genesis 3:17b-19

17b … “Cursed is the ground for your sake;

In toil you shall eat of it

All the days of your life.

18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,

And you shall eat the herb of the field.

19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread (h3899. לֶחֶם leḥem)

Till you return to the ground,

For out of it you were taken;

For dust you are,

And to dust you shall return.”

We only think we are in control of our own destiny. We believe that our vaccines and our antibiotics will conquer, subdue, and put us on top. We can learn a few lessons from Scripture. First, the nature of Creation is so intricately woven, like Scripture itself, that we will never get ahead of it, we can only hope to grow closer to the LORD by falling and rising again. 

23. Shofetim 19:11 (Mikraot Gedolot)

הֵם עִם יְבוּס וְהַיּוֹם רַד מְאֹד וַיֹּאמֶר הַנַּעַר אֶל אֲדֹנָיו לְכָה נָּא וְנָסוּרָה אֶל עִיר הַיְבוּסִי הַזֹּאת וְנָלִין בָּהּ.

Judges 19:11

11 They were near Jebus, and the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “Come, please, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites and lodge in it.”

To get the import of this, you have to read Judges chapters 19-21. It is not for digging for detail now, but for another time. Suffice it to say, the tribe of Benjamin, the son of the right hand, has a very important part to play throughput scripture. It is often referred to as “the least,” partly because of this very distressing incident. Three other important things to note: Benjamin has for the most part been assimilated into Judah (some would day this is one of a number of possible interpretations of “the greater shall serve the lesser,” which we will get to at some time); notice from the entry on Judges 1:21 above, that Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites, but continued to live alongside them; and note the apostle Paul describes himself twice as of the tribe of Benjamin (so was King Saul). These all will fit into thematic connections and the importance of cycles in life, times when we fall and are expected to rise, drawing closer to God. Solomon said it like this:

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:

Fear God and keep His commandments,

For this is man’s all.

14 For God will bring every work into judgment,

Including every secret thing,

Whether good or evil.

Jacob struggled with God and with men. He endured. Afterward, 

Genesis 32:30-31

30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: “For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” 31 Just as he crossed over Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped(h6760. צָלַע ṣâla‘) on his hip.

He was changed by the experience. He limped. The course of his life was changed, as all our lives must be. We must needs fall, and we must endure and rise, closer to God. We must see God face to face, recognize God’s hand in our challenges, and realize we have lived through it and are better off for the experience. These are the tests of life that strengthen, that make us more Godlike.

Just a couple more thoughts while we are here. Remember the first time we talked about God’s testing us, proving (נסה) us, in Exodus 16:4, giving the manna, but placing limits of our use of it (paralleling Gan Eden). This is the nature of God and God’s Creation. There is abundance, but the abundance comes with the recognition that it is God who provides. We are given an imperative in Genesis 1:28, to “subdue (h3533. כָּבַשׁ ḵâḇaš)” the earth. In the imperative is the idea of the ongoing challenge. We will never completely overcome. There will always be another challenge, another test, another “proof,” until we recognize God face to face. And be joyful in this recognition. (Deuteronomy 28:47)

One more piece, tying in some words, as we tend to do here. And we will only scratch the surface. Much, much more to this piece. This family/range of roots/words is so important in Scripture. I simply point to a small piece.  

For what they did in the Garden, the man and his wife were “naked and were not ashamed (h0954. בּוּשׁ bûš).”

There is no root יבס… Strongs notes that Jebusite/Jebusite comes from בוס. If there were a יבס it would be in C8, and recall that in many cases the בוס and יבס formed roots would have the same meaning. 

Jebus is Jerusalem (Joshua 18:28).

And notice כבש, subdue, mentioned just above the green box, is in C8.

And take note that in Genesis 1:9-10, when God gathered the waters together and said let the dry land appear, which God called earth (p.17 ארץ solidify basic needs), the root for dry land (יבשה) is יבש, also in C8 as “firm up.” We are talking about some very foundational understanding of life on earth, in God’s Creation.

A basic understanding of God and his Word, that you may feel free to accept or reject. In his Word, the LORD (יהוה) has given very clear guidance as to how life works, in this Creation. We are given free rein to use the instructions or not. When we do not, we suffer the consequences of what has already been laid out for us. When we do suffer consequences, if we demonstrate shame (בוש) and change our direction from fallen to rising up toward God’s way, God is totally merciful and willing to continue to work with us. God understands we are but flesh, and stiff-necked flesh at that. Testing continues,in order that we become more Godlike. We will fail. The key is to make the effort to do better next time, and endure; persist.

CM שׂנא distance (E26) [phonetic cognates: סנה fend off; זנה defect; זנח forsake; צנחdescend; צנה fence in; שנא weaken; צנע be discreet; שׁנה change; צנא protect] – just my interpretation, but if this were the case, it would be more along the lines (from context) of protecting the speaker and rejecting the enemies.

Perhaps you have come to your own conclusions. After my experience with this book (EDBH) and the education I have received to this point, my impression is that the author chose those specific examples because he wanted the reader to be considering all of these options. There are dozens of more straightforward examples that could have been given for forming nouns from roots by adding prefix א.
