51. Look for the Name

50. “Book of Remembrance”

Many of the tribe of Judah call God by the name of HaShem, meaning “the name,” השם. First, I did a search of the word השם in the Hebrew Scriptures without prefixes or suffixes. It seems we always get some surprises with these searches.

AlHaTorah השם no prefixes and no suffixes

Then I wanted to share with you a teaching that was shared with us by one of our professors when we were in school. Unfortunately in a recent change of residence, I no longer have my notes from the teaching, thus am going by memory. I share the teaching for a couple of reasons. One is to show you again the level of detail in which Scripture is written, stacked with layer upon layer of information in a relatively small amount of space, which can only be of Divine origin (rather like chiastic structures and parallel structures we’ve discussed previously). Secondly, I wanted to share what my study that grew from this recollection (with what feels to me like inspiration, from beyond my own capabilities) has revealed. Notice the letters in pink, see a pattern, and below I will share some about this. My apologies if by memory I am misquoting the sages in what I share. I have, again, purposely avoided going to the Hebrew writings. The passage speaks of an incident with Noah and his sons. The one named Shem is the father of the Semitic peoples. Hopefully this exercise also gets you more comfortable with the idea that Shin and Sin were once the same in the history of the Hebrew language.

I apologize also to our professor if I misquote him, by going on memory. My recollection is that we were shown this passage to show how the incident, whatever it was, of Ham “seeing the nakedness of his father and telling his brothers outside,” broke apart the ש and the מ of שם and that the maneuver undertaken by Shem and Japheth heals the שם back together again. We are definitely looking into some of the hidden meanings in Scripture now, some of the Sohd/Sod (p.168 סוד) level of PaRDeS. And a beginning foray into looking at numbers.

Looking further into the passage has shown me things I share with you that you can test for yourself and feel free to accept or reject, or simply yawn. The first thing I see in the randomly selected passages below of the hundreds that are listed is the indication of God’s involvement (except for the “five” references: those are from EDBH). The second thing is that שׁ and שׂ, importantly at least for this purpose, are treated the same. The third thing is that within a certain distance from one another, there is still involvement of “the Name.” In addition, it shows me that the order of the letters does not matter, whether it is ש and then מ(sofit or not) or מ and then ש. And finally, it showed me that within a certain distance, it’s acceptable for the letters to be within different words. Each time I give you an AlHaTorah search, I have been trying to share the link. Notice that there is a part of the search language (that I do not understand) that says: &distance=10&inorder=0 which seems to relate to the characters being within a certain distance of one another and in order or not. The programmer has found ways to get the computer to search for such instances.

Let’s look at this phrase from verse 23, which stands out, being much longer:

Deuteronomy 10:2-5

2 And I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke; and you shall put (h7760. שׂוּם śûm) them in the ark.’ 3 “So I made an ark of acacia wood, hewed two tablets of stone like the first, and went up the mountain, having the two tablets in my hand. 4 And He wrote on the tablets according to the first writing, the Ten Commandments, which the LORD had spoken to you in the mountain from the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly; and the LORD gave them to me. 5 Then I turned and came down from the mountain, and put (h7760. שׂוּם śûm) the tablets in the ark which I had made; and there they are, just as the LORD commanded me.”

Deuteronomy 12:5

5 “But you shall seek the place where the LORD your God chooses, out of all your tribes, to put (h7760. שׂוּם śûm) His name for His dwelling place; and there you shall go.

Selah

Genesis 19:1-2

1 Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. 2 And he said, “Here now, my lords, please turn in to your servant’s house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early (h7925. שָׁכַם šāḵam) and go on your way.” And they said, “No, but we will spend the night in the open square.”

Exodus 9:13-14 – (The Seventh Plague: Hail)

13 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Rise early (h7925. שָׁכַם šāḵam) in the morning and stand before Pharaoh, and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD God of the Hebrews: “Let My people go, that they may serve Me, 14 for at this time I will send all My plagues to your very heart, and on your servants and on your people, that you may know that there is none like Me in all the earth.

Exodus 24:3-4

3 So Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD and all the judgments. And all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words which the LORD has said we will do.” 4 And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD. And he rose early (h7925. שָׁכַםšāḵam) in the morning, and built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and twelve pillars according to the twelve tribes of Israel.

FIVE

① being prepared for action

Exodus 13:18

18 So God led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up in {orderly ranks} (h2571. חָמֻשׁ ḥâmuš) out of the land of Egypt.

② imposing a one-fifth tax

Genesis 41:34-36

34 Let Pharaoh do (this), and let him appoint officers over the land, to collect one-fifth(h2567. חָמַשׁ ḥâmaš) (of the produce) of the land of Egypt in the seven plentiful years. 35 And let them gather all the food of those good years that are coming, and store up grain under the authority of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. 36 Then that food shall be as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, that the land may not perish during the famine.”

③ five; number sufficient for needs

Genesis 47:1-4

1 Then Joseph went and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers, their flocks and their herds and all that they possess, have come from the land of Canaan; and indeed they are in the land of Goshen בְּאֶ֥רֶץ גֹּֽשֶׁן.”

2 And he took five (h2568. חָמֵשׁ ḥâmêš) men from among his brothers and presented them to Pharaoh. 3 Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?”

And they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds, both we and also our fathers.” 4 And they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to dwell in the land בָּאָרֶץ֮, because your servants have no pasture for their flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen בְּאֶ֥רֶץ גֹּֽשֶׁן.”

Bereshit 47:1-4

((גשן ↔︎ גשם Goshen  מ and נ reflecting one another-

Leviticus 26:3-4

3 “If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments, and perform them,

4 then I will give you rain (h1653. גֶּשֶׁם g̱ešem) in its season, the land shall yield its produce, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.))

(Recall out discussion about water/rain and God’s teaching. The time in Egypt was indeed a time of teaching.)

④ belly near fifth rib

2 Samuel 2:23

23 However, he refused to turn aside. Therefore Abner struck him in the stomach (h2570. חֹמֶשׁ ḥômeš) with the blunt end of the spear, so that the spear came out of his back; and he fell down there and died on the spot. So it was that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died, stood still.

With the very small sampling of verses, I hope you are convinced that the words with שם / מש in them are indeed an indication of God’s hand at work.

ש

EDBH • The ש establishes facts as to what is or what should be (Gn 10:10).

AHLB – ש – teeth, sharp and press; two, again, both or second

WHA – ש – The symbol of divine power and script – but also of corruption

DA – ש – teeth, ivory, point of a rock, a peak, to devour, consume, destroy, something sharp, El Shaddai

מ

EDBH • מ – that which emanates from an object or person.

AHLB – מ – liquid, water / sea, mighty and massive, chaos; as question word

WHA – מ – The symbol of the revealed and the concealed; Moses and Messiah

DA – מ – water, mighty, massive, many chaos (like the deep), to come from (like water down a stream)

Some other things that “came to mind” in doing the exercise, I tried to share, such as perhaps where the tradition of tearing one’s clothes originated, a forceful rending apart of the garment that would widely separate the ש and the מ, such as in the case of blasphemy shown or perhaps in our feeling in mourning of needing to express “where is God in this tragedy?” Did you ever wonder why folks in Scripture tore their clothes? And in case you ever wondered about the meaning of the passage in all four Gospels (very few occur in all four) about the garments at the crucifixion, it is the same Greek word I shared above g2440. ἱμάτιον himation / g2441. ἱματισμός himatismos. (See Mt27:35; Mk15:24; Lk23:54 [I always love how Luke positions things in his wording.]; John19:23-24 – John especially gives the full force of the reference – and is one of the times one gets the real impression that the Septuagint was used for the reference for the writing of the B’rit Hadashah because John quotes:

Psalms 21:19(22:18 in English) LXX

19 διεμερίσαντο τὰ μάτιά μου ἑαυτοῖς

καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν ματισμόν μου ἔβαλον κλῆρον.

Psalms 22:18 NKJV

18 They divide My garments among them,

And for My clothing they cast lots.

but the Hebrew that we have for this passage uses other words for clothing. We do know the Septuagint predates by several hundred years any Hebrew versions we have available.Hopefully you noticed the same in Leviticus 10:6 above.

The wars between Christianity and Judaism have done SO VERY MUCH DAMAGE over two thousand years. Can we not find our common ground? The common ground would begin with stepping back from some of our most basic assumptions and some of the fears driving what makes us hold on so dearly to that assumptive reasoning. Are we willing to admit our faults? Our secrets? Take first steps? Now is a time that, on many levels, many secrets are being revealed, coming into light. Do we embrace the revealing or fight against it? The truth will be revealed, gently or painfully. How do we approach it?

We must be willing to cross over the Jordan, to humble ourselves, in order to make progress. To quote Peter, Paul, and Mary, “River Jordan is chilly and cold; chills the body but not the soul. Hallelu Yah.”

Hopefully there is much here for you to research on your own and to ponder.
