Here one might benefit from thinking about all these options together. When we are struggling, moving with uncertainty, have doubts, we might want a meeting with others to take out question(s) apart, consider together (hopefully with others possessing Godliness) or meet with God at the “tent of meeting,” to ponder, wait, and receive God’s influence.

Leviticus 14:8 And he who is to be cleansed shall wash his clothes and shave off all his hair and bathe himself in water, and he shall be clean. And after that he may come into the camp, but live outside his tent seven days.

This brings it clearly home, if the other discussion doesn’t (the one on livestock, coming up next). First read this context beginning Leviticus 14:1. Then search for Naaman in the search bar, or you can begin by going to Naaman in Post 10. Keywords. He is also in Posts 32 and 35. What we have been translating as leper and leprosy all these year has to do with haughtiness. And it shows up in our countenance and also in our homes. h6879. צָרַע ṣâra‘ is the root for ‘leper.’

The cleansing of the ‘leper,’ haughtiness, is submitting to God and/or being shamed for a period of time. See Numbers 12 re: Miriam and her haughtiness and her shaming. As always, when you see the number seven, as here and with Naaman and with Miriam, it is a number of “completeness.” The root for seven is h7651. שֶׁבַע šeḇa‘.

By the way, ‘seven’ here is in the form שִׁבְעַ֥ת with the Tav ending, the “mark.” It occurs 117 times in that form. If you have a way of looking it up that way, I encourage that. It occurs most commonly as שִׁבְעַת יָמִים, what we translate as “seven days.” But again, know that “days” is not always what it means to us: e.g. see CWSBD:

It could here mean “a time of submitting to God.”

And if we look as we have been at different approaches to the understanding of the words, look at this GV family regarding ימים:

2 Samuel 19:8 Then the king arose and took his seat in the gate. And the people were all told, “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate.” And all the people came before the king.

2 Kings 13:5-6

5 (Therefore the LORD gave Israel a savior, so that they escaped from the hand of the Syrians, and the people of Israel lived in their homes as formerly. 6 Nevertheless, they did not depart from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, which he made Israel to sin, but walked in them; and the Asherah also remained in Samaria.)

I want to end with another in Jeremiah, because it will introduce the next entry. But these two are also very important, so I bring these in before the order in Scripture (both Hebrew and English order), and will then circle back around to Jeremiah. You will hopefully have a section of Jeremiah on your mind for a time to ponder 🤔 in your heart 💜.

Hosea 12:9 I am the LORD your God

from the land of Egypt;

I will again make you dwell in tents,

as in the days of the appointed feast.

Zechariah 12:7 “And the LORD will give salvation to the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem may not surpass that of Judah.

Jeremiah 35:7-11

7 You shall not build a house; you shall not sow seed; you shall not plant or have a vineyard; but you shall live in tents all your days, that you may live many days in the land where you sojourn.’ 8 We have obeyed the voice of Jonadab (יְהוֹנָדָ֤ב) the son of Rechab (רֵכָב֙), our father, in all that he commanded us, to drink no wine all our days, ourselves, our wives, our sons, or our daughters, 9 and not to build houses (h1004. בַּיִת ḇayiṯ) to dwell in. Now, I want you to read the entire pericope about the Rechabites, Jr35:1-19, and then next time will talk about some more depth, and I will share a little parable with you. Read it a few times before I send the next entry. Take your time. What can it be talking about? Each time ponder (in your heart), and somewhere in that time, think about the piece we have learned here about “influence.”

 

Hopefully this review of scriptures that speak of dwelling in tents helps understand what this phrase means. Likely it is an idiom meaning to have influence on others (at least), if you look at the EDBH explanations (which will connect with another entry very soon, tied to our key verse). Note that such influence can encourage or deny growth. We are messengers to others in life. What kind of messengers are we?
