The goal of this exercise is to show you how to use many of the tools introduced earlier on the LogAndSpeck website in conjunction with the methods and definitions seen in the EDBH deepen your understanding of Scripture, so that you may see how it applies in life. We will start slowly until you “get the hang of it.”

We will begin with a word that is not seen independently in Scripture, but is likely seen in many combined words, אר. (Such as h0712. אַרְגָּז ’arg̱âz, h0715. אַרְדּוֹן ’ardôn, h0769. אַרְנוֹן’arnôn)

There is an independent word, a cognate, ער, which is a city, and which we will get to. The city is named Arער. (Nm21:15, 21:28; Dt2:9, 2:18, 2:29; Is15:1) and is of Moab, of the people of Lot, which will be important as we proceed.

In various situations where there are two-letter words, Strong’s will make a determination as to which three-letter root it may have come from, or may simply say it is “a primitive word.” We have referred to Jeff Benner’s writing several times before. His hypothesis is that the roots are two letter words and others are built from those. It is not my place to say who is correct, but we are going to use a method of working with these two-letter words that says they are a member of the family of variants without stating definitively that they come from one specific root (in this case ארר or ארה or אור or יאר, but simply saying it is a member of the family with a nuanced meaning that fits in with the others. It likely ends with the same conclusions for meaning as Benner does, but comes from a somewhat different direction. It is not taking a stance against the traditional view of three-letter roots, but choosing to work within the scope of that tradition.

If we use Hirsch’s thought (and we will go through the exercise) that his primary resource is the cognate meanings, and we look at the meanings of all the cognates, we may be able to see how these words fit in the scheme. 

So, the family of variants for אר and each of their cognate meanings are:

Let us now work through the exercise. There are four three-letter roots listed in this family. Some will have more referenced verses, some less. First we look at those four roots and their entries. Then we will look at their cognates and their entries, which will give us many witnesses to see how the meaning was arrived upon.

This first example ארר has many verses listed as “also’s” – these are most often very enlightening regarding the “sense” of the meaning. The also’s might include a phonetic cognate or might reflect a context with a similar meaning. Again, all of these serve as “additional witnesses.” The also’s are denoted with a ||.

Genesis 4:10-16

The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground (h0127. אֲדָמָה ’ăḏâmâ). 11 And now you are cursed (h0779. אָרַר ’ârar) from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground (h0127. אֲדָמָה ’ăḏâmâ), it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth (h0776. אֶרֶץ ’ereṣ).” 13 Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground (h0127. אֲדָמָה ’ăḏâmâ), and from your face I shall be hidden. It is important to note here, the life situation plus Cain’s conscience, his inner feelings of guilt, weaken him internally; they isolate him. He has the sense that everything is against him. He is no longer “earthly and solid” (h0127. אֲדָמָה ’ăḏâmâ from אדם p.3), but is separated from others, wandering, isolated even in trying to “solidify his basic needs” (h0776. אֶרֶץ ’ereṣ – ארץ p.17). A “curse” ארר, is not something imposed on Cain (or us) by God, it is the direct consequence of our own feelings when we act against God or neighbor (or brother). Scripture is a revelation about the nature of life in this world, and a description of behaviors that build us up or tear us down.

Exodus 22:7-9

7 “If a man gives to his neighbor money or goods to keep safe, and it is stolen from the man’s house, then, if the thief is found, he shall pay double. 8 If the thief is not found, the owner of the house shall come near to God to show whether or not he has put his hand to his neighbor’s property. 9 For every breach of trust, whether it is for an ox, for a donkey, for a sheep, for a cloak, or for any kind of lost thing, of which one says, ‘This is it,’ the case of both parties shall come before God. The one whom God condemns shall pay double to his neighbor.

It may be helpful here to draw a parallel with the so-called “Test for Adultery” in Numbers 5:11-31. The suspicious husband brings the suspected unfaithful wife to the priest, and the priest “brings her before God,” confronts her with the truth. The earthenware vessel is חרשׂ(p.90), CM “focus decisively,” and the dust עפר (p.189), CM “expose/conceal,” on the floor (h7172. קַרְקַע qarqa‘ – likely a compound derived from קרר + קעע – CM קרר “encircle” + CM קעע “increase/reduce”). This is not some sort of magic that makes the thigh fall away and the body swell; it is focusing, with another of authority, a confrontation of the Truth, and the curse (once again in this passage ארר) is the awareness that “coming clean” can bring strength and healing, while continued deception weakens the person internally. Coming in the presence of the Author of Life, like swearing on the Bible in front of the Judge as authority figure, with the attorney asking highly-focused questions, is the most likely scenario of getting to the Truth. It works, partly because we do have an inner conscience or indwelling spirit, and partly from the pressure of the circumstances created for the “testing.” We face the consequences, and generally life is more merciful on the one confessing.

Cursing

Genesis 3:14

14 So יהוה God said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this,

You are cursed (h0779. אָרַר ’ârar) more than all cattle,

And more than every beast of the field;

On your belly you shall go,

And you shall eat dust

All the days of your life.

Genesis 9:23

23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness (h6172. עֶרְוָה ‘erwâ) of their father. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness (h6172. עֶרְוָה ‘erwâ).

Genesis 12:3

3 I will bless those who bless you,

And I will curse (h0779. אָרַר ’ârar) him who curses (h7043. קָלַל qâlal) you;

And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Genesis 12:8  (Cognate הרר, and also*)

8 And he moved from there to the mountain (h2022. הַר har) east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to יהוה and called on the name of יהוה.

*As is often the case with these “also” verses they are an indication of a “sense” or a theme. Such verses are often a marker of a beginning or end of a discussion that brings clarity to the idea that is being discussed. In this example, Hirsch is explaining that the meaning of the words “curse” is reflected in the meaning of this passage, the pericope from Gn12:1-12:8, in this case with an extra highlight of verse 12:3 spelling it out for us. We have to use many of our tools in these interpretations, especially noting now the tool of parallelism. This is like Jesus/Yeshua telling the Parable of the Sower and then, in response to the question in Mt13:10 by the disciples, “Why do you speak to them in parables?”, giving the explanation. It is also like the parallel structure of a song juxtaposed to a narrative, such as Judges 4 and 5.

So, here it is critical to read the context and to use the knowledge that the names of places have meaning, and use the definitions Hirsch has shared, to get an understanding. This will then go back and help explain (in this situation especially) another passage he has placed in parallel. 

Let’s look at Gn12:1-8 and use our keys to help unlock the passage. We need all the keywords. (You actually have to go back to chapter 11, and especially the section introducing Abram, 11:26-32, to get the back story but too much for now).

Genesis 12:5

5 Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people (h5315. נֶפֶשׁ nep̱eš) whom they had acquired in Haran (h2771. חָרָן ḥârân from h2787. חָרַר ḥârar), and they departed to go to the land of Canaan (h3667. כְּנַעַן ḵena‘an; from h3665. כָּנַע ḵâna‘). So they came to the land of Canaan.

If I list all the connections here, it will be intolerably long; just know they are there. That’s why it is condensed like the Manhattan apartment (referenced in LogAndSpeck).

Let’s condense and say they had been strengthened by their time of isolation and were headed to learn to focus decisively by humiliation and defeat.

Genesis 12:6

6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as Alon Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land.

One could say his initial contact with the Canaanites was one of isolation, but perhaps he was strengthened and protected by God in this feeling of being endangered by the opposition. He was somewhat torn between these feelings. He was moving to the different condition of being strengthened by the situation.

His more gentle way of teaching us may be to cover and then isolate.

Whatever means of teaching us, we must be willing to accept. Though it may feel harsh, life is a teacher; existence••• its everyday occurrences, should lead us to an internal awakening. Our hearts of stone should be changing to hearts of flesh. (Jb41:24; Ek36:26; 2Cor3:3) The more we resist the teaching, the more it becomes concentratedWe are getting an opportunity to experience this now. Do we change our behavior? Or do we continue on our merry way? Complacency as an evil is one of the more common messages in Scripture (for more on Moab see the next entry on Complacency).

Psalms 102:17-18

17 He shall regard the prayer of the destitute (h6199. עַרעָר ‘ar‘âr),

And shall not despise their prayer.

18 This will be written for the generation to come,

That a people yet to be created may praise the LORD.

Again, h6199. עַרעָר ‘ar‘âr is a doubling, an emphasis

Life will be the teacher••• it is inescapable. The faster we run away, the faster it runs after us. We must stop and ask ourselves, “What am I personally doing that must change? It cannot be blamed on another. Whomever (see Genesis 12:3, below, and the discussion of קלל) we are dishonoring as a person, whatever prejudices we hold (see Luke 10:25-37), we must reconsider. It is the twins wrestling in Rebekah’s womb:

Genesis 25:23

23 And the LORD said to her:

“Two nations are in your womb,

Two peoples shall be separated from your body;

One people shall be stronger than the other,

And the greater shall serve the lesser.”

Exodus 3:14

Think of it as life, existence, actual ‘be-ing’ which “sends (h7971. שָׁלַח šâlaḥ) the curses.” 

h7971. שָׁלַח šâlaḥ is p.263 שלח send; move to goal  CM move in a balanced way

The “curses” (ארר) are the repercussions of the choices that we have made in life, the consequences, the side effects, or opposite side of the coin. The ארר consequences occur to “move to a goal,” that goal being the teaching that יהוה is sending us. And the LORD / life / existence does indeed move in a balanced way. His responses are measured, balancing out our choices, our actions. The more we fight against his efforts through “life = existence” to teach, the more pressure results. Equal and opposite reaction. h7043. קָלַל qâlal is also often translated as “curse.” See Post 17 in LogAndSpeck for more detailed discussion on words translated as “curse” and the confusion it may cause.

When we “diminish the substance” of another being, be it their “material things” or their spiritual being (we degrade character or destroy confidence), the natural consequences are that it will come back upon us. What goes around comes around•••

Scorching; burning

Go in and take possession of the land that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their offspring after them.’

Deuteronomy 12:1-7

1 “These are the statutes and rules that you shall be careful to do in the land (h0776. אֶרֶץ’ereṣ) that the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess, all the days that you live on the earth (h0127. אֲדָמָה ’ăḏâmâ). 2 You shall surely destroy all the places (h5725. עֲדֻלָּם ‘ăḏulâm) where the nations whom you shall dispossess served their gods, on the high mountains (h2022. הַר har) and on the hills and under every green tree. 3 You shall tear down their altars and dash in pieces their pillars and burn their Asherim with fire. You shall chop down the carved images of their gods and destroy their name out of that place (h4725. מָקוֹם mâqôm). 4 You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way. 5 But you shall seek the place (h4725. מָקוֹם mâqôm) that the LORD your God will choose out of all your tribes to put his name and make his habitation there. There you shall go, 6 and there you shall bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the contribution that you present, your vow offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock. 7 And there you shall eat before the LORD your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your households, in all that you undertake, in which the LORD your God has blessed you.

h5725. עֲדֻלָּם ‘ăḏulâm – probably a compound word עד + לם derived from p.179 עדד tear off pieces CM pierce + p.10 אלם bind; tie together CM bind/loosen

h4725. מָקוֹם mâqôm = p.299 מ that which emanates from an object or person +  p.226 קוםrise CM establish

We spoke about h0776. אֶרֶץ ’ereṣ and h0127. אֲדָמָה ’ăḏâmâ with Cain. ארץ solidify basic needs, אדם be earthly and solid. Cain isolated himself from these and became a wanderer. Notice verse One here has both words in it. The LORD is here telling the people to tear apart the idea that binds people together of a worship in a ‘mountaintop experience’ type of situation. We are to worship the LORD in the place which he has established, namely in being earthly and solid, in solidifying basic needs. This means to put your belief in a loving and generous and saving God into practice in the everyday experience. Love God. But not on the mountaintop. Love your neighbor as yourself. John 13:1-17, we are to be servants. Matthew 25:31-46, we are to care for those less well off than us.
