10. Frankincense ‎לבונה

11. In Burning and Dimming
9. An example: Proverbs 3:6

This is a fairly simple example of use of the EDBH to understand the message in Scripture. I hope the methods help you and help to bring some peace to our world.

h3828. לְבוֹנָה leḇônâ; or לְבֹנָה lbonah; from h3835. לָבַן lâḇan

This is one of the simplest examples in really using the EDBH, to begin with.

  • Eight translations, giving some good variety for witnesses
  • None of the translations have more than one verse listed (no also’s)
  • No variants (Gradational or Derivational)
  • Only one phonetic cognate
  • Phonetic cognate does have two “also’s” for explanation purposes

Phonetic cognate does have one Gradational Variant

Aspen tree

Genesis 30:37 Now Jacob took for himself rods of green poplar/aspen (h3839. לִבְנֶה liḇneh) and of the almond and chestnut trees, peeled white (h3836. לָבָן lâḇân) strips in them, and exposed the white which was in the rods.

((I would add for your awareness also, Laban, Jacob’s father-in-law; Libni eldest son of Gershon and grandson of Levi; Lebana, head of a family of exiles who returned with Zerubbabel; and two places named Libnah:

    • a royal city of the Canaanites in the southwest captured by Joshua; allocated to Judah and made a Levitical city; site unknowna
    • station between Sinai and Kadesh of Israel during their wilderness wanderings))

Cognate meaning – expose/protect

Only one phonetic cognate in this instance, but one that has additional verses, “also’s,” which is where one can get much of the sense of the meaning.

Translations

Seeking shelter

Genesis 19:1-2

1 Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. 2 And he said, “Here now, my lords, please turn in to your servant’s house and {stay the night} (h3885. לוּן lûn; or לִין liyn) and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.” And they said, “No, but we will {stay the night} (h3885. לוּן lûn; or לִין liyn) in the open square.”

||
Psalms 25:12-13

12 Who is the man that fears יהוה?

And his descendants shall inherit יהוה.

||
Numbers 16:11 Therefore you and all your company are gathered together against the LORD. And what is Aaron that you complain (h3885. לוּן lûn; or לִין liyn) against him?”

Inn
Genesis 43:21 but it happened, when we came to the inn (h4411. מָלוֹן mâlôn), that we opened our sacks, and there, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; so we have brought it back in our hand.

I encourage you to read Genesis 13:5-16 as further explanation, and more is seen in LogAndSpeck.com, Post 43 All Those Nations, discussion of this passage and “the Canaanites and the Perizzites were dwelling in the land.”

Our journey toward “purification” is dealing with the trials of life, without grumbling. It is thus that we will come to our inheritance. When we complain about others, or about our leaders, we are complaining about God, the maker and ruler of all. Paul re-words this in Romans 13:1-5. It is our hearts that must change. May Frankincense and Myrrh purify us.

Myrrh h4753. מֹר môr
GV p.144 מרר arouse [bitterness]; p.143 מרה oppose; p.143 מרא expand [enlarge]; p.137 מור exchange; p.105 יםר exchange; (p.157 נמר spotting)  CM ימר effect change
DV אמר – p.144 מרר arouse [bitterness]; p.143 מרה oppose; p.137 מור exchange > p.12 אמר organize speech to be heard and understood

CM (מרר no cognates); מרה spread; מרא spread; (מור no cognates); ימר effect change; אמר bring together

May we not complain, but rather may bitter times in life effect change in us and bring us together.
