IS OUR VISION BLINDED?

Some may have recognized the name of the website to have come from a Scriptural quotation:
Matthew 7:3 ESV Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
The first lesson in understanding Scripture is looking at the context. Understanding very well that we are trying to make a point and have found a verse that says exactly what we want to say, or at least we think it does, nevertheless we must, as readers, understand that the verse was composed in a context, and the context will help explain more precisely what the author meant. We will cover much more about context in the future, but the “welcome” to the website should reflect the teaching therein, so to follow is the pericope, the “thought envelope” or section, which includes the above verse:
Matthew 7:1-5 ESV
1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”

Our message will be focused a great deal on how we see Scripture, and not attempting to create “Doctrines of Man” (see Matthew 15:9 and Mark 7:7 and their context). At all times when reading here, try to keep in mind this thought, that we each carry with us our own prejudices that influence our assessment of other people. And many of our prejudices come from teaching that we have heard that may be inaccurate, or only “the opinion of man.” No teacher can speak with more authority than what Scripture teaches. Whatever is said here, or whatever you hear from any teacher, double-check for yourself – be Berean (see Acts 17:10).
In that line of thinking, whenever you read on this website, have Scripture at hand. There will be many verses copied here, but also many that are only referenced with a book, chapter, and verse. If you do not stop to read the referred-to passages you will miss much of what is being said.
